Flaky puff pastry makes quick work of these fun hand pies. Each savory pocket is stuffed with a plant-based meat filling for a hearty, healthy bite. The simple and savory flavors have universal appeal so everyone will feel like a winner at the end of the game.

Why You’ll Score Big With This Vegan Football Appetizer

Finger food is always your best bet when it comes to party starters. Forget the forks and fall in love with this catch!

  • Meant for a crowd. Each batch easily makes 15 – 20 mini football pastries, depending on the size of your cookie cutter. It’s a great way to stretch your ingredients and make sure no one walks away hungry.
  • Fast and easy. They only take 20 minutes to bake and come together in a flash. You can even enlist the kids to help with the assembly process to speed things along.
  • High in protein. Vegan ground meat tastes just like conventional beef and is an equally rich source of complete protein. That means you could turn these appetizers into a meal with some veggies to round out your plate!

Key Ingredients

Just eight ingredients, not counting water, stand between you and snacking satisfaction. Here are the essentials you need to stock up on:

Vegan ground meat: One of the most popular meat alternatives on the market, there’s no end to vegan options for ground beef! Use any brand you prefer, fresh or frozen and thawed, or make your own from TVP, crumbled tempeh, seitan, lentils, and/or nuts.

Onion: Start by sautéing an onion and your kitchen will instantly smell amazing. Yellow is fine here, but you can use white or red, or switch things up with shallots or leeks for a change of pace.

Garlic: There’s no thing as too much garlic. Consider the two cloves listed here as a starting suggestion; add to taste.

Green peas: For a pop of color and vegetable infusion, frozen peas are the perfect mix-in. Kids won’t even know they’re eating their veggies hidden inside these vegan super bowl snacks!

Puff pastry: The real star of the show, frozen puff pastry takes all the hassle out of prep work. Read on to learn more about this essential staple.

Flour: Regular all-purpose will do the trick here unless you need a gluten-free option. You can use white rice flour or potato starch in that case, since it only takes a small amount to prevent the pastry from getting too sticky.

Coconut oil: Add richness and shine with just a little dab! You could substitute melted vegan butter or simply olive oil if you’d prefer.

Is Puff Pastry Vegan?

Traditionally, puff pastry is a type of laminated dough, made with many thin layers of butter. This is still true for some high-end bakeries and gourmet grocers, but many more storebought options are now “accidentally” vegan! Always read labels to verify, since formulas are liable to change at any time.

Brands Of Vegan Puff Pastry

Availability will vary depending on your location and the season, since some view puff pastry as a holiday item only. Here are the best vegan choices found in the US:

Where to Buy Vegan Puff Pastry

Most mainstream grocery stores should have at least one option readily available in the freezer section, while more specialized varieties and brands can be purchased online. When in doubt, start your hunt here:

  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Whole Foods
  • Sprouts Farmers Market
  • Safeway/Randall’s
  • Albertson’s
  • HEB
  • Amazon Fresh

Step-By-Step Instructions

Here’s the rundown on how to make these vegan game day puff pastry footballs!

Step 1: Prepare the vegan ground meat according to the package instructions. In a sauté pan, heat oil, sauté onion and garlic until translucent, then add frozen peas and cook until warmed. Add the vegan ground meat, cook for 4 minutes, remove from heat, and set aside.

Step 2: Sprinkle flour over a flat surface, and using a rolling pin, roll puff pastry sheets until they are twice their original size. Cut out football shapes of uniform size and place half on a lined or greased baking sheet.

Step 3: Brush a thin layer of melted coconut oil along the edges of the dough on the baking sheet. Spoon taco meat onto the center of each pastry piece, leaving a 1/2-inch border for sealing.

Adding filling to the football pastry dough.

Step 4: Cut lace marks into the remaining football-shaped pastry pieces (these will be the tops). Place them atop the bottom dough, covering the plant-based meat filling, and seal tightly using a fork to crimp the edges together. Brush the tops with coconut oil and bake for 20 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven and enjoy as soon as they cool!

Tips For Success

Puff pastry is the Swiss army knife of appetizers and desserts, savory and sweet. You don’t need any baking experience to transform it into impressive treats! If this is your first time working with it, here’s how to use puff pastry like a pro:

  1. Let the package of frozen puff pastry thaw completely before working with it; either in the fridge overnight, or on the counter for 1 – 2 hours. If it’s still partially frozen when you unfold it, it’s more likely to crack or tear.
  2. Lightly flour both the counter and the top of the dough so it doesn’t stick to either your working surface or the rolling pin. You may need to reapply as you work.
  3. Be careful not to over-stuff each football hand pie. Make sure the edges are sealed with a fork all the way around to prevent the filling from leaking out.
  4. Brush the tops with coconut oil right before baking to ensure a brilliant golden-brown finish.

Flavor Ideas And Adaptations

The real beauty of such a simple, foolproof formula is that it’s ideal for putting your own unique spin on. Here are a few winning ideas to pump up the flavor:

  • Cheese pizza: Add shredded vegan mozzarella and marinara sauce or sundried tomatoes.
  • Smoky BBQ: Add smoked paprika and your favorite BBQ sauce.
  • Yellow curry: Add madras curry powder and cayenne pepper for an extra kick.
  • Breakfast bites: Swap the vegan ground meat for crumbled or chopped vegan breakfast sausage and use diced potatoes or shredded hash browns instead of peas.

Alternate Shapes

If it’s not game day, you can use any cookie cutter shape you like, not just footballs! In fact, you don’t need cookie cutters at all. You can simply cut squares with your knife or use a drinking glass as a template to make circles. For more festive ideas, consider:

  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • ½ yellow onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • ½ cup frozen peas

Snacks make the world go ‘round, staving off hunger between meals while preventing meltdowns and tantrums along the way. At any age, having quick, energizing vegan snacks on hand is essential. But for kids, it’s even more essential. So here is a round-up our favorite vegan kids snacks — from store bought to homemade!

Growing kids especially need almost continuous access to stay full and focused, fueling a full day of work or play. It’s also a great opportunity to sneak more vitamins and nutrients into your picky eaters, simultaneous staving off the impulse to overeat at mealtimes. When energy levels run low, a quick bite can be a real lifesaver.

Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to navigate around the junk food out there, especially when cravings strike. There’s nothing wrong with an occasional treat, but things like chips and cookies should be the exception rather than the rule.

Avoid the pitfalls of processed foods, get out of your snacking rut, and rediscover the fun of healthy snacking all over again. Just a little bit of planning can take the stress out of that midday break.

Easy Vegan Kids Snack Ideas

The best snacks for kids will always be fresh, whole foods. Sugar, fat, and salt are non-issues when you’re serving up the basics, like cut apples and baby carrots. That doesn’t mean it needs to be boring, though! Get everyone on board by dressing up fruits and veggies with sauces and dips, playful presentations, and crave-worthy flavors. Try fun lunchboxes to make snacking more fun!

Here are a few healthy snacks you can whip up anytime, no recipes required.

  • Fruit
  • Hummus with carrot sticks
  • Sliced apples with peanut butter
  • Dates stuffed with nut butter
  • Fruit kebabs
  • Nuts (cashews, peanuts, seasoned walnuts, etc.)
  • Trail mix
  • Refried bean quesadilla or mini burritos
  • Ants on a log (celery with peanut butter and raisins)
  • Smoothies
  • Popcorn
  • Edamame in pods
  • Sliced bell pepper (with vegan ranch dip)

Vegan Snack Recipes for Kids

Great snacks shouldn’t take a lot of time, effort, or money. Here are some delicious ideas that anyone can make!

You can make a batch and freeze them and pull them out for a secretly healthy quick breakfast, snack, or lunchbox addition.

Khichdi

Khichdi has long been a staple for vegan and vegetarian kids in India, made from easily digestible whole grains and legumes. Traditionally a simple, warming stew, it can also be rolled into balls that are easier for toddlers to pick up and feed themselves. The whole family can enjoy this one as a main dish, too.

Deviled Potatoes

Kids Bars

Snack bars are not always the healthiest option, but these portable, filling, tasty bars are a favorite among kids and the easiest dependable food source to toss in your bag when you’re running out the door.

When choosing snack bars for young children, there are fantastically healthy options made from dates, nuts, and fruit. And there are less health-optimal options made with refined sugar, oils, and chocolate. Kids will naturally prefer the later if offered both varieties, but if you only keep the healthier options at home, most kids love them.

Holding out a seasonal gingerbread larabar with packaging visible.

Look for bars that are low in added sugars and high in fiber, as this helps maintain steady energy levels and supports digestion. Health-minded parents may also look for bars with simple ingredient lists, avoiding artificial additives and preservatives. For those seeking vegan options made without dairy or eggs, there are plenty of choices available.

Whole Food Snack Bars (Healthier Options)

  • Lara Bars (most are vegan and made with whole food ingredients)
  • That’s It Bars
  • Yumi Organic Superfood Bars
  • Skout Organic Bars

Popular Snack Bars (Sweet)

  • Bobo’s Oat Bites
  • MadeGood
  • Clif Bars
  • Z-Bars
  • GoMacro Kids Bars
  • Nature’s Bakery

Always check the label for any hidden animal-derived ingredients and allergen warnings, especially if your child has specific dietary restrictions or allergies.

All-Natural Fruit Snacks

  • Fruit leather is essentially fruit puree that’s been dried in flat sheets for a shelf stable alternative to fresh. There’s no added sugar which makes it a smart way to curb sweet cravings.
  • Gummies are not all created equal; many aren’t even vegan! Stay away from candies made with gelatin and sugar in favor of fruit snacks made with pectin and real fruit juices.

Amara’s Freeze-Dried Smoothie Melts

Amara’s smoothie melts are one of our favorite packages snacks because they’re actually healthy, but they taste like candy so kids love them! My toddler is obsessed.

The ingredients are so clean and simple: organic fruit, organic coconut milk, and organic carrots. That’s it! They have all the flavor and nutrition of a refreshing fruit smoothie with none of the spills, smears, or splashes. And no added sugar!

Two of the flavors are vegan (mango carrot and carrot raspberry) and they are ideal for toddlers, older kids, and even the youngest ones just learning to self-feed. Parents, you can munch on them too — I do! They come in a resealable bag and won’t melt, so they’re very convenient to pack in lunches or toss in your bag and take on-the-go. You can even find them on Amazon.

Pssst! If your little one is just starting to explore solid foods, or you’re trying baby led weaning, these can also help babies practice their grip and improve hand-eye coordination.

Solely Organic Whole Fruit Gummies

Solely makes some of the best fruit chews—they are made with just fruit and Vitamin C, and totally delicious! These are lunchbox staples.

Bear Snacks Fruit Rolls

These adorable fruit rolls are widely accessible in the United States, made from just fruit, and they come with a fun collectable cards with animal facts on them! These are also great to pack in school lunches.

Trader Joe’s Fruit Leather Buttons

Leave it to Trader Joe’s to find a new spin on healthy fruit snacks, making them even more fun for kids! These organic peel-off “buttons” are flat round fruit leather pieces that kids can pull off of a thin piece of paper in the package.

Fruit Leather

Almost every grocery store and big box store carries fruit leather, and the ingredients just keep getting better! The colorful organic fruit leather pictured below is from Target, and these are one of the most budget-friendly options for fun fruity kids snacks and treats.

Froot Thief Fruit String

A new kid on the block, The Froot Thief brand is poised to become one of the most popular, spinning fruit-based chews into long playful strings that are each unbelievably nine feet long! These are not very widely available yet, but you can snag a case on Amazon to support them in these early days.

Froot Thief's fun fruit leather string with a cute raccoon on the kid's snack package.

Cereal and Granola

Dry cereal can be a great finger food, especially on long car trips or days outside since it doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Pack single servings of your favorite vegan cereal in reusable pouches or zip top bags for grab-and-go convenience.

Granola has potential as well, like cereal, but can be more difficult to eat without utensils. Varieties with bigger clumps and clusters are best to prevent crumbs.

Plant-Based Cheese

Cheese is can be a fun addition to kids lunchboxes or snack trays, especially since it comes in so many forms. These days you may be able to find vegan cheese sticks (from brands like Miyoko’s and Daiya), creamy spreadable wedges (like these from Good Planet Foods), and even a plant-based version of the iconic wax-wrapped Babybel wheel.

Plant-Based Yogurt

Plant-based yogurt now comes in ever flavor and color imaginable! You can even find vegan yogurt tubes (for all the Go-gurt lovers) and Forager Projects’s cashewmilk yogurt pouches ideal for lunchboxes, that are nearly identical to the conventional options.

Just keep in mind most yogurts are loaded with sugar, so even though they contain beneficial probiotics, they should probably fall into a “sweets and treats” category rather than an everyday snack.

Veggie Chips, Crisps, Puffs, and Straws

Bamba is a beloved snack for kids and toddlers, especially popular in Israel. These peanut-flavored puffed snacks are not only delicious but also a source of essential nutrients. They are made primarily from peanuts and contain no artificial flavors or preservatives. Bamba is a fantastic choice for parents looking to introduce their children to nuts in a safe and enjoyable way, as it melts in the mouth and is easy for little ones to handle. It’s a satisfying and crunchy treat that can be a great addition to a well-balanced snack repertoire for kids.

Harvest Snaps Baked Pea Crisps are an excellent option for health-conscious parents seeking a tasty and wholesome snack for their kids. Made from green peas, these crisps are not only vegan but also rich in plant-based protein and fiber. They have a satisfying crunch that kids love and they’re a great way to sneak some extra veggies into your child’s diet while keeping snack time enjoyable.

Chickpea puffs are another popular chip alternative for kids. The brand Hippies popularized this gluten-free and vegan snack that’s also a good source of plant-based protein and fiber. They come in fun flavors, including a vegan cheese flavor!

Freeze-dried vegetables seem like a questionable choice for young kids, but they’re surprisingly delicious, even if your little ones turn up their noses at the veggies on their plates! The drying process concentrates their natural sweetness, so single-ingredient crisps that are just corn, tomatoes, or peas take on greater depth of flavor.

Veggie straws or chips taste more like potato chips that everyone knows and loves but add a little bit more nutrition into the picture. They’re a good way to wean kids off less healthy snacks while still satisfying with a similar experience.

Cauliflower puffs prove that cauliflower really can do anything it puts its mind to! Puffed snacks are traditionally made from corn, but these use everyone’s favorite cruciferous vegetable as the base instead, coating them with dairy-free cheesy powder for that perfect savory finish.

You can also make your own chips like these zero-waste crispy potato skin chips and these kale chips!

Plant-based meal delivery services have proliferated in recent years, expanding from an obscure business model to one as common as the standard grocery store. There’s something for everyone now.

  • If you like to cook, you can get bundles of ingredients with recipes.
  • If your expertise in the kitchen ends at the microwave, you can have finished dishes ready to heat and eat land on your doorstep with just the click of a button.
  • For those feeding a family, still more options abound for bulk meal prep.

That’s to say nothing of specialized diets, from paleo to keto vegan to gluten-free, sometimes available all on the same platform. How does one begin to pick apart the best choices, given such a superabundance of promising meals—and seemingly endless deals?

While most enterprises now offer at least a handful of plant-based entrees, a growing number of meal delivery services boast a fully vegan menu across the board. Depending on what you want to eat, how much work you want to do, and additional restrictions, here’s what you need to know before you hit “add to cart.”

Meal Delivery with Vegan Options

If you have a diverse range of tastes in your family, some might want both vegan and non-vegan options. These companies can fill your plate with exactly that!

Green Chef

Catering specifically to specialty diets, there’s a range of options here from keto to gluten-free. They send organic, pre-portioned ingredients and easy to follow recipe cards that take the stress out of the typical dinner rush. The “plant-powered” menu does sometimes include meals with dairy, so double-check before checking out.

Hungryroot

Shop for recipes or just to fill your fridge, all the prep work is done for you to eat or explore on your own terms. Meal suggestions are quick, simple, and easy to whip up, made of healthy staples that you can mix or match as desired.

Fresh ‘n Lean

Designed with nutrition in mind, the goal of this service is to put healthy eating on autopilot. The vegan options are relatively limited in the protein-heavy listings, but there are some innovative alternatives to explore, such as their meatless “chickN.” As a bonus, everything is gluten-free.

Trifecta Nutrition

This is what your personal trainer would eat- if you had a personal trainer. These ready-to-eat meals are made for those focused on fitness and weight loss. Nutrient dense but calorie controlled, anyone who wants to kickstart a new health program would be well served here.

Mosaic

Mosaic meals are 100% vegetarian with plenty of vegan options, as indicated by the (V) symbol by the name. Global flavors that span from curries to stir-fries add excitement to these options, that also include breakfasts and lunches to make meals a no-brainer.

CookUnity

Markedly different from conventional frozen meals or recipe services, this approach takes nearby chefs based on your location to provide the menu. Get as few as 4 or as many as 16 meals a week. Bear in mind that availability does vary greatly depending on the chefs nearby; you may not have any vegan options for some weeks.

HelloFresh

As the largest meal-kit provider in the United States, it’s surprising that so little attention is paid to the plant-based population. There is no HelloFresh vegan option; rather, you can select the “veggie box” and omit the cheese or eggs provided with cruelty-free options of your own, if you really wanted to order.

Online Vegan Grocery Stores with Fresh Meal Options

What’s more convenient than online shopping? How about online shopping for your groceries AND dinner at the same time? That’s a snap with these all-in-one vegan grocery delivery services that offer completely plant-based goods alongside heat-and-eat entrees.

GTFOitsvegan

For rare specialty goods like vegan lobster or plant-based fried eggs, this is where you’ll discover a bold new world of cruelty-free innovation. You can get all that and a bundle of tamales, frozen pizzas, and falafel for dinner.

Vegan Essentials

Voted as the best online vegan grocer from 2005 – 2020, this shopping resource has withstood the test of time. Shop with confidence for animal-free and cruelty-free products from this vegan-owned company that’s been operating for over 20 years.

Of course you can also order grocery delivery through Amazon (Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market) and Instacart. If you’re short on time or stuck in your house for any reason, this is an affordable and incredibly convenient way to save time and outsource your vegan grocery shopping!

Homemade “Delivery” Meals

If you’re hooked on the convenience of vegan delivery services but can’t afford to indulge every week, don’t worry! Most companies offer a recipe section for all their menu options online, completely free.

Scope out the meal plan and build your own schedule accordingly, but shop on your own to save on costly delivery fees and excessive packaging. That’s a delicious win-win!

You can also find lots of vegan dinner recipes on the blog and in our cookbook, The Friendly Vegan Cookbook!

Experts agree that the best way to get your recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals is through a balanced and diverse diet. Average people can agree that such a lofty goal might not be so easy.

Between busy schedules, grab-and-go meals, and picky eaters, it’s a good idea to fill the gaps with a daily supplement or two. Vegans especially need to keep tabs on certain things that are harder to come across naturally on a plant-based diet, but everyone can benefit from a bit of nutritional assistance.

In the vast array of tablets, gummies, sprays, and liquids, what are the best bets for optimal health? More importantly, what would make one of these options unsuitable for cruelty-free consumers? Let’s take a closer look at the fine print!

Non-Vegan Vitamin Ingredients to Avoid

While the active ingredients in most vitamins and supplements are synthesized in labs or purely plant-based, the trouble comes with the medium in which it’s packaged.

  • Gelatin: Convention soft gels or capsules have traditionally been made from the clear casing, made from highly processed animal bones and hooves. This is also an issue for anyone that keeps kosher since the origin isn’t often specified. It could be cows, horses, pigs, fish, and or more. Luckily vegetarian softgels and capsules exist and are becoming more and more widely available.
  • Collagen: Related to gelatin, this is a protein that comes from the connective tissue, skin, tendon, bone, and cartilage from various animals.
  • Fish or Cod Liver Oil: This one should be obvious, but you should keep an eye out for our aquatic friends, particularly when selecting an Omega 3 or DHA supplement.
  • Lactose: Often used as a filler ingredient, this milk sugar is refined from dairy. Anyone with a dairy allergy or intolerance needs to be very careful to steer clear, too.
  • Honey: A spoonful or sugar helps the medicine go down, but unfortunately, that sweetness sometimes takes the form of honey, particularly in liquid formulas for kids. Though it can take the bitter edge off various vitamins, it’s not at all sweet for the bees and their colonies.
  • Vitamin D3: This specific form of vegan Vitamin D can sometimes be sourced from sheep’s wool. Unless it’s specified as coming from a plant source, assume the worst and leave it on the shelf.
  • Glucosamine and Chondroitin: This duo often work together in various formulations for enhancing joint health. Sadly, the shellfish and sharks that they come from would have preferred to be together under the sea.

There are many other questionable components, such as Carotene, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin A, fatty acids, and more that can sometimes come from an animal source. Remove any doubt or worry from your RDA by simply seeking out companies that are transparent about their ingredients and clearly state their commitment to vegan values.

Key Vitamins That Are Important for Vegans

There are several essential vitamins and nutrients that are essential for all humans to get, but some are particularly necessary for vegan and vegetarian eaters to pay attention to. These include:

Best Vegan Multivitamins for Adults

Everybody is different, so no single choice will be the best one for everyone. Thankfully, there’s a wealth of options on the market these days to accommodate everyone’s needs, cruelty-free.

Vegans especially need to be mindful of their Omega-3s, Vitamins B12 and D, Calcium, Iodine, Iron, and Zinc, since these can be harder to get on a plant-based diet. Consult a doctor to get your levels checked before making radical changes to your daily regime.

If you like the simplicity of taking one supplement, here are the best vegan multivitamins available.

If you love a cozy cup of vegan hot chocolate often—like me—welcome! You need this recipe in your life. In just a few minutes you can have a prepared dairy-free hot chocolate mix that brings your cozy beverage that much closer to you when the comfort craving strikes.

Pouring Vegan Hot Chocolate into a Mug

Key Ingredients

The best part about this hot cocoa mix? You just need four ingredients:

Hand holding up a bag of Chocolate Emporium semi-sweet chocolate chips.

That’s it! You can store it in a 16 ounce mason jar or any sealed container and it will last all season long.

How To Use This Vegan Hot Chocolate Mix

When you’re ready to make a steaming mug of this vegan hot cocoa mix, it only takes a few minutes to prepare! Simply heat some dairy-free milk up either in a microwave-safe mug or bowl in the microwave, or warm it up on the stove.

Stir in 3½ tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix for every one cup of milk. Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Scooping up the best vegan hot chocolate mix.

Topping Ideas

While the mixture does include mini vegan chocolate chips, it’s always fun (and delicious) to add some toppings! Here are some of my favorites:

Hot Cocoa Bar

If you want to have even more fun, create your own little at-home vegan hot cocoa station! Get some vegan marshmallows and drop them in a jar. If the holidays are near, neatly place some candy canes in a festive mug. Pop a little jar of vanilla extract or peppermint extract by your hot cocoa bar for a winter-inspired flavor boost. Set out your favorite hot cocoa sipping mugs, and honey, you’ve got yourself a vegan hot cocoa bar!

If you want to get really crazy (I always do!) you can even order a sparkly sign for your hot cocoa bar. Has your home ever been this ready for the holidays

With only three simple pantry ingredients, you and your family can create salt dough ornaments for any season or special occasion. Measuring out ingredients, forming the dough, and incorporating tactile elements is fun for any age, but especially for younger ones. This soothing activity brings together science, cooking, and artful creativity––what could be better?

When the holidays roll around, the first thing that comes to mind is decorating…or maybe food. Either way, both food and decorations can transform a festive event into something even more magical and memorable. (Although this DIY clay recipe is technically edible, we don’t recommend giving it a try. The amount of salt would be overwhelming!)

If you have kiddies at home who become bored easily (or if the weather is wonky), use this opportunity to create an at-home Art Camp for Kids! This is the perfect time for children (or adults!) to allow their creativity to flow freely. Spend the day mixing up the salt dough (a super sensory activity opportunity) and decorating with delight after the ornaments are done.

Let’s get started!

DIY Clay Tips

Creating your own homemade clay is easier than you think! Although this project may get a little messy, it’s totally worth it. These salt dough ornaments can be exquisite and elegant or super chill and cheezy. They can be cute and cuddly, classic or contemporary, and even silly or scary. There are no rules once the dough is ready.

Before you get started, here are few suggestions to keep the clutter in check:

  • Cover Your Space – Find an area in your home (possibly the kitchen) where you can add easy-to-clean cloths or newspaper to spread over your working surface. It might be a good idea to cover your clothing, as well. A kitchen apron or old clothes would work well.
  • Collect Creative Tools – Fill small cardboard boxes or plastic containers with a variety of art supplies such as paints, paintbrushes, crayons, markers, small items (rocks, seashells, bells, etc.), glue, and hanging materials (twine, ribbon, lace, etc.). This will make organization less chaotic and can help to keep things contained.
  • Cleaning Supplies – Even the neatest person will appreciate having some wet cloths, reusable paper towels, wipes, or perhaps a little brush and dust pan to minimize the mess. Washing hands before and after this project is a must. Especially before adding decorations to your lovely salt dough ornaments.

Holiday Ornament Shape Suggestions

This homemade clay recipe isn’t only for the winter holidays. There are endless ways in which you can personalize this dough to make ornaments of any shape, size, or color. Here is a small list of shape suggestions for every season or celebration. We’d love to hear your ideas, too! Make sure to add them to the comments below.

  • Celebrate the Seasons – Be inspired by the myriad of colors in each season. For Fall, make leaf shapes in red, yellow, brown, and orange. In Spring, cut out and paint flowers, umbrellas and birds in soft, pastel shades. The Summer months can be swimsuits, sunshine, and flip flops in the brightest jewel tones. Finally, Winter symbols of snowflakes, snowmen, and candles in soft blues, yellow, and white.
  • Best Birthday Ever – Pick out shapes that match the person whose birthday it is. Think about their favorite hobbies, colors, and foods when creating their ornaments. They can be given as mini paperweight gifts, hung together in a row as a bunting in their favorite place, or ask friends and family to write a little loving note on the back in paint or marker as a birthday token.
  • Make Festive Days Extra Fancy – These adorable ornaments can be made for any yearly holiday. For instance: Valentine’s Day (hearts, cupids, lips), Easter (bunnies, baskets, birds), New Year’s (champagne bottle, horns, year numbers), Halloween (pumpkins, witches, candy), Thanksgiving (corn, friends, pie), or even the First Day of School (pencils, letters, school bus). The ideas are endless!

How To Decorate Your Salt Dough Ornaments

This is the most thrilling part! Use your brain power to come up with your best and most brilliant ideas. You can do it! These are only some suggestions for decorating. The ideas are infinite!

To double check whether the art supplies you’re using are vegan-friendly, make sure to consult our Vegan Art Supply Guide!

Helpful Hint: If you wish for your salt dough ornaments to last more than a year, consider spraying them with a clear acrylic sealer or painting on a layer or two of Mod Podge. Remember to let dry thoroughly before storing.

Scented Salt Dough Ornaments

Why not add a little something special to your ornament before baking? Include several drops (or sprinkles) of a natural scent to the unbaked dough to boost these salt dough decorations up a notch. Here a few scent recipes to get you started:

  • Lavender & Rosemary – 9 drops of lavender essential oil + 6 drops of rosemary essential oil or extract. Wonderfully herbal!
  • Orange & Cinnamon – 15 drops of orange essential oil (or extract) + ½-1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. This will give your ornament a delicious, spicy scent, as well as a warm, light brown shade.
  • Peppermint & Vanilla – 5 drops of peppermint + 10 drops of vanilla essential oil or extract. Sweet and cool, just like a candy cane!

Note: Make sure to mix in the scented oils, extracts, or spices well into the dough before cutting and baking. If the scent is not strong enough when done, you can always use a paintbrush to brush more onto the back of the salt dough ornament (in case of staining) and let dry.

Four Tips For Hanging Up Your Salt Dough Ornaments

Hanging an ornament (for any occasion) should be fun, not frustrating and fiddly. If you follow these tips, you’ll find yourself looking forward to this step every year. No need to worry!

Salt dough ornament shaped like a star, hanging on a tree branch.

Use Strong, Reliable Materials

Skimping on the string or using ratty, old ribbon won’t do, friends! If it looks worn out or is breaking apart, put it in the compost or leave out for the birds. Go for good stuff such as: kitchen cotton string, hemp twine, linen cord, satin ribbon, metal ornament hooks (not the flimsy kind), or even rubber bands.

Be Careful About the Hole Placement

When adding the hole to the unbaked ornament, make sure that the hole is not too close to the top. If it is, chances are that the hole may either close up or not be sturdy enough to hold the ornament’s weight once out of the oven. Place the hole at least ¼-½ inch down from the tippy top.

Hang To Your Heart’s Content

Choose between a tree (either natural, artificial or even a small, metal tabletop tree just for ornaments), a wooden, expandable hat rack, or simply anywhere in your home that can hold a little bit of weight. Other unique ideas include door knobs, chair arms, banana trees, chandeliers, mug rack, or even your rear view car mirror! Find that special place and make it a tradition to add it there every year.

Bring Out The Bunting

Instead of arranging the ornaments individually on a tree, hook, or stand, you can tie or sew them onto a sturdy cord (like a cotton clothesline) or to a long length of seam binding (you can find it at any fabric store). Then, simply attach each end securely to the edges of a doorway, across a fireplace mantle or over a window curtain rod. Bunting makes everything more exciting!

Handprint Clay Creations

Make your own homemade clay handprint at home! Swap out cookie cutters for fingers, hands, or paws! These can be such wonderful and thoughtful gifts for family members and friends, as well as to commemorate significant life events and occasions.

  • New Baby
  • Pets
  • First Day of School
  • Anniversaries
  • Birthdays

To create these lovely, personalized clay pieces, make the salt dough as usual. But, instead of cutting out small, individual shapes, roll out the dough into one large shape. Place on a sheet of parchment paper. Try to keep the dough to around ½” thickness. Clean and dry the selected hand, finger, thumb, or paw (or item) well. Press the chosen part into the dough so that there’s a definite depression, but not all the way to the bottom. Remove very gently.

Lift the parchment paper off of the counter and place onto a baking sheet. Bake as for the salt dough ornaments. You may choose not to flip the piece over in the middle of baking. If you feel nervous that your creation might crack or break, simply turn the baking sheet around 180 degrees and continue baking. It’s not completely necessary for it to be flipped onto the other side. When done, let cool as directed and decorate!

Step-By-Step Tutorial

To make these easy homemade clay ornaments all you need are three simple ingredients: all-purpose flour, salt, and water! That’s it!

Key components in salt dough ornaments with labels.

Step 1:

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F or the lowest temperature your oven will go to.

In a medium to large mixing bowl, add the flour, salt, and water and mix thoroughly using a wooden spoon or your hands. Once a dough forms, keep kneading it for a few minutes, adding a sprinkle of flour as needed if the dough becomes too sticky.

Step 2:

Once the dough has a soft, mostly dry texture, allow it to rest in the bowl for 20-30 minutes.

Salt dough ornament batter all mixed together in a bowl.

Step 3:

When ready, sprinkle a little flour on the counter top or cutting board and roll out the dough to ¼-inch thickness.

Step 4:

Press cookie cutters into the dough surface, spacing them in a way that allows you to use up as much space as possible. Carefully peel away excess dough and transfer the cut shapes to a parchment lined baking sheet. Continue cutting out ornaments (occasionally reforming dough and rolling it back out when you only have scraps left) and placing them on the baking sheet until all of the dough has been used up.

Salt dough rolled flat with cookie cutter placed on top.

Step 5:

Use a straw or large wooden skewer to make a clearly defined hole near the top of the cut shapes.

This is also the time to use any stamps or embossing letters if you have them.

Step 6:

Place on a middle rack of the oven and bake for 30 minutes.

Using a spatula, carefully flip the ornaments over and bake for another 30 minutes or until the shapes feel firm. Depending on your oven, it may take more or less than 30 minutes. Keep checking every 5 minutes or so. Don’t let the ornaments become brown.

Step 7:

Take the baking sheet out of the oven and allow the ornaments to cool completely before removing from the tray.

Step 8:

Decorate any way you like (adding paint, glitter, accessories, etc.) and thread a piece of ribbon or string through the top hole of the ornament. Enjoy!

Salt Dough Ornament Q&A

My ornaments look puffy! What do I do?

Good question! At higher temperatures, the dough seems to expand a little more easily. To prevent this from happening, use the lowest setting on your oven when baking your ornaments. Also, place them as far away from the heating element as possible. Usually, this means towards the bottom of the oven.

After baking your cut shapes for 30 minutes (at your oven’s lowest temperature), flip them gently and make sure to check them every 5 minutes or so. Some ovens cook more quickly than others.

How do I make no bake salt dough ornaments?

As an alternative to baking your salt dough ornaments in the oven (or if you do not have an oven), you can allow your ornaments to air dry on parchment paper or wax paper in a place that has low humidity.

This may take from a few days to a week, but they will eventually dry and harden. Make sure to flip the ornaments once per day. If you have the extra time and space, this is a nice way to save on electricity as well.

You won’t believe how easy it is to make this insanely delicious dairy-free ice cream cake. With just minutes of effort, your favorite flavors of store-bought vegan ice cream, and a package of Oreos, you’ll have the best vegan ice cream cake ever. It’s the perfect vegan dessert to serve at any birthday, holiday, or event. Just be warned, you may never want to bake a birthday cake again!

The centerpiece to any great celebration is always cake. While all cakes are invited to my parties, absolutely nothing beats this vegan ice cream cake. Stacked up high with layers of creamy vegan ice cream and chopped nuts, tucked in a crust made from blended Oreos, and decorated with chocolate drizzle or frosting and with sprinkles, every slice is a riot of flavors, colors, and textures. Whether it’s summer or winter, every last bite will be gleefully gobbled up before a single drop can melt away.

It may sound like an impossible dream once you’ve gone vegan, but you’ll be thrilled to discover that’s not the case! Making your own ice cream cake without any dairy or eggs is surprisingly easy, if not downright fun. This recipe comes from The Vegan Friendly Cookbook by Michelle Cehn and Toni Okamoto. It’s a recipe passed down from Toni’s mother-in-law, Jolene Shapiro. Enjoy!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • No experience necessary – Not a baker? Never made ice cream before? No problem! The most important skill you need here is patience since it simply takes time for the layers to set properly. Everything else is more assembly than cooking. You can even get the kids in the kitchen to help!
  • Make ahead – Since this cake can just chill out in the freezer until it’s party time, not only can it be made well in advance, but it’s also much better if you do. That will ensure it’s perfectly set and sliceable while you have a chance to enjoy the party.
  • Any flavor goes – Mix and match to make your favorite combinations. Absolutely any ice cream is fair game, which you can then pair with all your favorite cookies, candies, and sweet toppings.
  • Gluten-free options – Double check labels and select gluten-free cookies to make this a treat for those with celiac disease too.
  • Crowd-pleasing – This one is foolproof. Who could resist the lure of ice cream cake? Young or old, vegan or not, everyone will LOVE this treat.

Key Ingredients in this Ice Cream Cake

Vegan ice cream: I scream, you scream, we all scream for vegan ice cream! Whether it’s made from oats, soy, coconut, pea protein, or any combination, everything goes here. Just make sure that you picking up a full pint (16 ounces) and not a downsized container, since some manufacturers have started packaging a scant 14 ounces at a time to boost their bottom line.

Oreo-style cookies: Chocolate wafer cookies with a vanilla crème filling is the classic combination, but you have plenty of opportunities to add even more flavor to this layer! And yes, Oreos are vegan! You can also find other brands like Back to Nature. You’ll just blend these up with vegan butter in the food processor to create your delicious cake crust.

Vegan butter: Since vegan butter becomes solid at cold temperatures, it acts as a binder here for the crust, while preventing the cookie layer from getting too soggy.

Chopped peanuts: Go nuts! For a crunchy, salty contrast to the sweet and creamy ice cream, classic peanuts always satisfy. If you have a nut allergy, though, you can always swap them out for pepitas, sunflower seeds, or simply more sandwich cookies.

Melted chocolate: For aesthetics and flavor, you can’t top a generous drizzle of chocolate. This could be just straight up melted chocolate, chocolate ganache, homemade magic shell, or even chocolate syrup.

Chocolate and buttercream frosting: Don’t leave your creation naked; frosting is a fun and easy way to make it look amazing. If you don’t want to make your own, you could take a shortcut here with store-bought frosting too. Most flavors of Duncan Hines frosting are “accidentally” vegan, but always check labels to make sure.

Sprinkles: Add a dose of magic and happiness to your dairy-free ice cream cake by shaking on your favorite brand of vegan sprinkles! These days there are lots of colorful sprinkles, sparkly sprinkles, and all sorts of fun-shaped sprinkles that are made without the dreaded confectioners glaze (which isn’t vegan). Yay, sprinkles!

Flavor Combination Ideas

Not sure where to start, or simply overwhelmed by the endless possibilities? Here’s a cheat sheet for some of our favorite pairings.

  • Cookie Monster: Cookie dough ice cream on the top and bottom, crunchy chocolate chip cookies, vanilla frosting. Top with whole, mini chocolate chip cookies, or Cookie Crisp Cereal pieces!
  • Neapolitan: Strawberry ice cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sandwich cookies, and chocolate and vanilla frosting. Top with fresh strawberries and mini chocolate chips.
  • Grasshopper: Mint chocolate chip ice cream, chocolate ice cream, mint-chocolate sandwich cookies, and chocolate frosting.
  • Chocolate-Covered Strawberry/Cherry: Chocolate ice cream, strawberry or cherry ice cream, double chocolate sandwich cookies, and chocolate frosting. Top with lots of melted chocolate and fresh strawberries or maraschino cherries.

Recipe for Success

If this is your first time making an ice cream cake, don’t sweat it! Here are some tips to party-perfect results.

  1. Make sure the ice cream has been “tempered” before adding it to the cake pan. That means slightly softened. All you need to do is let it sit out at room temperature for about 10 minutes so it’s not frozen solid, but not yet melted. This makes it much easier to spread smoothly.
  2. Press the ice cream layers down firmly to remove any air bubbles for an even, flush fill.
  3. Keep your kitchen as cold as possible so the ice cream doesn’t melt while you work with it. If that’s not possible, take breaks between each step, putting your cake back into the freezer to re-solidify.
  4. To make cutting the cake easier when it’s all said and done, run your knife under hot water before each slice, wiping the blade off on a clean kitchen towel to keep the cuts neat.

Tips for Storing and Saving Your Ice Cream Cake

Make your cake well in advance of your party so you can simply enjoy the festivities. Keep it in the pan to prevent any other items from bumping into it, cover with a layer of plastic wrap, and label clearly. It should keep in the freezer for up to 6 months.

When you’re ready to serve, transfer it to the fridge and let sit for 20 – 30 minutes before slicing so it’s not rock solid. Add any fresh fruits or final garnishes right before bringing it out to the table.

Return any uneaten pieces back to the freezer immediately so they don’t melt away!

Prep Time 30 minutes
Freezing time 12 hours
Total Time 12 hours 30 minutes
Servings 8
Calories 305kcal

Ingredients

  • 2 1-pint containers vegan vanilla ice cream (or flavor of your choice)
  • 2 1-pint containers vegan ice cream in a flavor other than vanilla (we recommend using the same flavor, but feel free to go wild and mix it up if you prefer)
  • 1 14.3-ounce package Oreos (or nutter butters or other vegan cream filled sandwich cookies)
  • ½ cup vegan butter at room temperature
  • 2 cups chopped peanuts or another package of cookies that you can lay flat for the middle layer, divided

Instructions

  • Take the ice cream out of the refrigerator and allow it to thaw on the counter while you prepare the crust.
  • In the bowl of a food processor, combine the whole package of cookies and the vegan butter. Process until thoroughly combined.
  • Line a springform pan (8 inches wide × 3½ inches deep) with parchment paper. To do so, cut one piece of parchment to the size of the bottom of the pan, and cut another strip to wrap around the sides.
  • Using your hands, evenly press the cookie mixture into a thin layer on the bottom of the pan. (This will leave the sides of the cake exposed so you can see the layers, but if you’re worried about the ice cream melting, you can press the cookie mixture up the sides of the pan, too, for a crust that will keep the ice cream well contained while serving.)
  • Scoop the vanilla ice cream out of the cartons and spread it into an even layer over the cookie mixture.
  • Evenly spread 2 cups of the chopped peanuts (or sandwich cookies laid flat) over the vanilla ice cream.
  • Scoop the other-flavored ice cream over the peanuts and spread it into an even layer. (If you added cookie mixture to the sides of your pan and there is any excess reaching above the sides of the ice cream, cut the excess away so the cookie mixture is level with the ice cream cake.) Lay a piece of parchment paper over the open top of the springform pan, and press the parchment against the ice cream until it’s tightly packed.
  • Place the ice cream cake in the freezer and allow it to harden overnight or for at least 12 hours.
  • Remove the ice cream cake from the freezer, invert it onto a plate, and undo the springform pan. Flip the cake onto a serving plate or cake stand.
  • Top the cake with any of the optional decorations. Serve the cake immediately or return it to the freezer until you are ready to serve.

Notes

  • Optional Decorations – melted chocolate, chocolate shell, chocolate glaze, vegan rainbow sprinkles, chocolate or buttercream frosting, chopped peanuts, and/or fruit.
  • Presentation Tip – “If presentation is important and you want clean lines, then pop the bottom layer of vanilla ice cream back into the freezer to firm up before adding the next layer of ice cream on top.” —Emily R.

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness, but for vegans, it can also present unique challenges. Navigating family gatherings, office parties, and traditional holiday feasts while adhering to a vegan lifestyle might seem daunting.

However, with careful planning, creativity, and patience, you can not only survive but thrive during the holiday season as a vegan. In this comprehensive guide, we will provide you with a wealth of tips and strategies to make your vegan holiday experience enjoyable, delectable, and memorable.

Vegan Holiday Survival Guide: 5 Ways to Survive The Holidays When You Are Plant-Based | WorldofVegan.com | #vegan #holiday #podcast

Preparation is Key

Before diving into the holiday festivities, it’s essential to lay a solid foundation.

Understanding Your Hosts: Take the time to understand your hosts’ menu plans and their willingness to accommodate your dietary needs. Knowing their approach can help you prepare better.

Communicating Your Dietary Needs: Diplomatically and clearly communicate your vegan requirements to your hosts in advance. Providing them with information about veganism and its importance to you can foster understanding and cooperation.

Offering to Contribute: Extend a hand by offering to bring a vegan dish or two to share. This not only ensures there’s something delicious for you to eat but also demonstrates your commitment to making the gathering enjoyable for everyone.

Veganizing Holiday Classics

One of the biggest challenges during the holidays is finding vegan alternatives to traditional dishes.

Turkey Alternatives: Explore options such as Tofurky, seitan roasts, or stuffed acorn squash to replace the traditional turkey centerpiece. These alternatives can be just as festive and satisfying.

Tofurky roast sliced, in a baking dish on top of roasted vegetables.

Stuffing, Gravy, and Sides: Veganize stuffing and gravy with plant-based ingredients, and consider crafting vegan versions of beloved side dishes like mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and cranberry sauce.

Vegan Desserts: Don’t skimp on dessert! Experiment with vegan versions of classic holiday treats such as pies, cakes, and cookies. Many store-bought options are now available for your convenience. You can also order baked goods from online vegan bakeries that will deliver to your doorstep!

Vegan Cookbooks: There are dozens of vegan cookbooks that can help you craft the perfect meal, including several holiday-specific cookbooks! The Friendly Vegan Cookbook is filled with omnivore-approved recipes that are share-worthy for the holidays. And books like The Super-Fun Times Vegan Holiday Cookbook by Isa Chandra Moscowitz are solely focused on supporting your holiday dinner table spread.

Navigating Social Situations

Holiday gatherings often involve socializing with friends and family, which may lead to some potentially awkward moments.

Handling Awkward Questions: Be prepared for inquiries about your veganism and respond with patience and respect, focusing on the positive aspects of your lifestyle choice.

Being an Advocate, Not a Preacher: While it’s essential to be an advocate for veganism, avoid preaching or making others uncomfortable. Instead, engage in positive conversations that inspire curiosity and open-mindedness.

Hosting Your Own Vegan Gathering: If you’re comfortable doing so, consider hosting a vegan holiday feast. This way, you can share your delicious plant-based dishes with others and showcase the variety and flavor that veganism has to offer.

Surviving Office Parties

Office parties often revolve around food and socializing, so it’s crucial to navigate them smoothly.

Bringing Your Own Dish: Consider bringing a vegan dish to share at office parties. This ensures you have a delightful option to enjoy and introduces your colleagues to vegan cuisine. Sweet and sour vegan meatballs are a perfect party appetizer to share!

Vegan bbq sauce meatballs served on a platter with toothpicks.

Networking with Vegan Colleagues: If you’re lucky enough to have vegan colleagues, connect with them! You can provide each other with support and potentially collaborate on vegan-friendly office events or potlucks.

Speaking with HR or Event Organizers: If office events consistently lack vegan options, consider discussing the issue with HR or event organizers. Your feedback may prompt positive changes in future gatherings.

Navigating Dietary Restrictions

Vegans often have additional dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free, nut allergies, or soy sensitivities. You may also have preferences, like eating healthy plant-based food, oil-free vegan food, sugar-free recipes, or even fully raw.

Gluten-Free Vegans: If you’re both vegan and gluten-free, seek out recipes and products that meet both criteria, and inform your hosts about your dietary needs in advance.

Nut Allergies: Be vigilant about cross-contamination and opt for nut-free vegan options to ensure your safety and enjoyment.

Soy or Other Allergies: If you have allergies or sensitivities to specific foods like soy, find soy-free vegan protein sources and clearly communicate your allergies when dining out.

Conscious Gift-Giving and Receiving

The holiday season often involves gift exchanges, which may require some special considerations.

Choosing Thoughtful Vegan Gifts: When selecting gifts for loved ones, opt for cruelty-free and vegan options. Many ethical and sustainable products are available, from skincare to clothing and more. Explore our Vegan Gift Guide for more than 100 considerate ideas.

Educating Loved Ones About Your Preferences: Politely inform friends and family of your vegan gift preferences to avoid non-vegan surprises. They may appreciate the guidance in selecting thoughtful gifts.

Graciously Accepting Non-Vegan Gifts: If you receive non-vegan gifts, thank the giver graciously. You can consider donating or regifting these items to avoid waste while maintaining positive relationships.

Share Delicious Vegan Food

The holidays present an excellent opportunity to share the benefits of eating plant-based with others.

Sharing Delicious Vegan Dishes: Let the flavors of your vegan holiday creations speak for themselves. Your friends and family may be pleasantly surprised by the deliciousness of plant-based meals.

Suggesting Vegan Alternatives: Kindly propose vegan alternatives when discussing holiday meal planning with friends or family members. You might be surprised by their willingness to accommodate your preferences.

Offering Resources: Share vegan cookbooks, documentaries, blogs, or local vegan events with those interested in learning more about vegan living. Providing resources can inspire others to explore a plant-based lifestyle.

Dining Out and Traveling for the Holidays

For those who plan to dine out or travel during the holidays, some extra precautions and strategies can make the experience smoother.

Researching Vegan-Friendly Restaurants: Use online resources, apps, and websites to identify vegan-friendly restaurants and dining options at your travel destination. This proactive approach ensures you’ll have delicious vegan meals to enjoy.

Planted soul vegan restaurant food in Atlanta, Georgia.

Packing Vegan Snacks: Carry a supply of vegan snacks when traveling or attending events to keep yourself fueled and satisfied. This helps avoid hunger-induced temptations to stray from your vegan path.

Talking to Chefs and Waitstaff: When dining out, communicate your dietary needs clearly to restaurant staff. Inquire about vegan menu options or ask for modifications to existing dishes.

Staying Healthy During the Holiday Season

Maintaining good health and well-being during the holiday season is not a goal for everyone, but if you’re trying to practice healthy habits, here are some tips.

Balancing Indulgence and Nutrition: While it’s tempting to indulge in holiday treats, strive for balance by incorporating nutritious options into your meals. This helps you stay energized and feel your best.

Staying Active: Don’t neglect your exercise routine. Regular physical activity helps you stay energized, manage stress, and maintain your overall well-being.

Managing Stress: The holidays can be stressful. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing to manage stress and stay grounded.

5 Tips for Surviving the Holidays

1.  Bring your own delicious vegan dish to share!

One of the best ways to ensure you have something tasty to enjoy at holiday gatherings is to bring your own vegan dish to share. This serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it guarantees you’ll have a delectable meal that aligns with your dietary choices. Secondly, it provides an opportunity for others to try and potentially fall in love with vegan cuisine.

Sharing a fantastic vegan dish can spark conversations and curiosity among your friends and family. If you’re seeking inspiration, explore our vegan holiday recipes.

For those willing and able, consider taking it a step further by hosting the holiday celebration yourself. This way, you have complete control over the menu, ensuring it’s entirely plant-based. If hosting the main family holiday isn’t feasible, consider planning your own intimate gathering with friends where you can celebrate the season your way.

2. Let your host know you’re vegan ahead of time.

Avoid awkward situations and ensure a smoother dining experience by informing your host that you are vegan ahead of time. This simple courtesy prevents the uncomfortable question of why you’re not eating certain dishes and ensures that your host can make accommodations.

Remember, it’s a win-win situation; your host will appreciate your openness, and you can enjoy the meal without any concerns about hidden animal products.

3. Don’t arrive hungry!

Arriving at a holiday gathering famished can lead to unnecessary stress and temptation. Instead, eat a light meal or snack before you go. This approach allows you to be relaxed and enjoy the festivities without focusing too much on the food you can’t eat.

Alternatively, carry a vegan energy bar or some portable snacks with you, just in case the options served don’t align with your dietary preferences. This way, you’re always prepared and can avoid resorting to the bread basket.

4. Find your favorite vegan roast!

Traditionally, holiday dinners feature meaty roasts or turkey as the centerpiece. Fortunately, there are now numerous vegan alternatives available that are just as delicious and festive. Before the main event, try out a few different vegan roasts to find your favorite. You can explore our guide to vegan holiday roasts for inspiration.

Keep an eye out for offerings from well-known plant-based turkey roast companies like Tofurky, Field Roast, and Gardein. Having your preferred roast on hand ensures you won’t miss out on a satisfying holiday meal.

A collage of several delicious vegan roast recipes served for holidays.

5. Maintain a positive attitude at the dinner table

Your attitude and demeanor can have a significant impact on the holiday experience for both you and those around you. While it’s essential to stand by your principles and beliefs, there’s no need to be a downer at the dinner table.

Demonstrating enthusiasm for your vegan lifestyle and the delicious food you’re enjoying can be infectious. Share your excitement about your veggie roast or other plant-based delights, showcasing that being vegan is not about deprivation but abundance.

If conversations turn toward veganism, handle them with grace and patience, and be prepared to gently steer them in a positive direction.

Your attitude ultimately reflects on others. Enjoying your time with friends and family and taking part in dinner while enthusiastically talking about the veggie roast, shows how this is not a depriving lifestyle but an abundant one! What Goes Into A Vegan Gift Basket?

Every unique basket typically has a theme that unites the items within. In terms of specifically vegan options, that simply means that no animal products make the cut. That excludes anything containing meat, dairy, eggs, and honey when you consider consumables, and silk, wool, leather, and other derivatives in terms of household goods, clothing, cosmetics, and beyond.

These are great options when shopping for someone with intolerances, a limited diet, or ethical concerns. Just be sure to double-check the contents of each item if it’s a severe or life-threatening allergy.

This is especially true for companies that aren’t exclusively vegan, and even more so for those producing food themselves, as cross contamination is a very real concern. When it comes to packaged goods, not every company lists exactly what goes into each bundle, or the individual ingredients they use. It’s worth sending them an email or giving them a phone call to be safe.

What Are The Best Food Gift Baskets?
