A brand-new high-speed blender (such as a Vitamix) wrapped up with a bow sits high on this list. It’s the gift that can be used almost every day for years to come. A Beautiful Vegan Outerwear Piece

One of the beauties of choosing a cruelty-free lifestyle is that suddenly clothing, shoes, and jackets become a lot more affordable. With leather and wool off the table, shopping might typically take place at stores like Target because they use mostly man-made materials.

But guess what? High-end vegan pieces are out there, and the relative rarity makes them that much more special! Several companies exist that make luxury vegan outerwear that any gal or guy would cherish.

A Vegan Meal Delivery or Meal Kit Service

We could all use more delicious home cooked meals with less effort, right? Today there are tons of vegan meal delivery services that could be a wonderful treat for someone special. Some of the services send frozen meals to your doorstep that you can simply heat and eat, while others send recipes with all the pre-measured ingredients so you can follow the instructions and make a dish at home from scratch.

Make it extra-special by making reservations at a fancy vegan restaurant and planning a surprise visit to a local animal sanctuary!

If you’re unable to plan the trip yourself, you can give your loved on a certificate to airbnb or their favorite airline so they can book it themselves.

The Ultimate Vegan Getaway

How about a blissful vegan getaway? You can book a stay at an all-vegan resort such as The Stanford Inn By The Sea (in Northern California). UGG boots have taken the fashion world by storm, rising from obscurity to an obligatory inclusion for any reasonable shoe store. Rugged yet graceful, soft as plush slippers, and weather-proof to keep out the cold, aesthetics meet practicality in every pair. Everyone from celebrities to athletes can be seen wearing them proudly around town, proving their versatility and durability at once.

Unfortunately, it isn’t everything it seems from the surface when you take ethics into account. Have you considered what goes into making this iconic line of footwear?

If you take a peek at the label, you’ll quickly see that UGGs are not compatible with a cruelty-free lifestyle. Luckily, there are several alternative brands that make UGG-style vegan boots that are just as cozy, without the sheepskin or wool.

Woman holding out a vegan label tag on a pair of UGG boots.

Every movement starts with single step, and the fashion industry is no different. The UGG brand was founded in 1978 and got off to a very slow start. Only 28 pairs were sold in their debut season, but business escalated exponentially in 1994 when they were worn by the U.S. winter Olympic team.

Oprah Winfrey started the craze in earnest in 2003 when she included the boots in her holiday gift guide, “Oprah’s Favorite Things.” From there, many celebrities began to take notice, purchasing their own pairs and later being photographed wearing the boots around the world. Suddenly, UGGs were everywhere, and everyone wanted their own.

Are UGGs Vegan?

No, classic UGG brand boots are not vegan. Sheepskin is the primary material for each style, with finishes made from leather, fur, suede, and/or wool. All of which, of course, is not aligned with a compassionate vegan lifestyle.

You should be equally wary of UGG home goods, ranging from blankets to bags, lounge wear to socks. Most are made with animal products and derivatives sourced from farms worldwide and treated with several chemical components for preservation.

What’s Wrong With Fake Uggs?

Counterfeit UGGs are even worse than the genuine articles. There’s no regulation for the materials or production, which means it’s much more likely that there’s child or slave labor involved.

Additionally, the sheep may be skinned alive in a horrific practice known as mulesing. No veterinarians need to be present and there’s never any anesthetic involved. For those with weak stomachs or tender hearts, I do NOT recommend Googling it.

While the price tags on knock off UGG boots made from leather or suede are cheaper, the ethical cost is staggering.

Vegan Alternatives To UGGs

It’s easy to stay fashionable, cozy, and cruelty-free thanks to many recent advancements in technology and manufacturing. Here are the top brands making boots like UGGs with a clear conscience.

Bearpaw

While the brand itself isn’t entirely vegan (they do sell sheepskin and wool boots), Bearpaw also has clearly marked vegan options. And they are some of the comfortable and most high-quality out there. Bearpaw’s vegan boots are made with vegan microsuede and faux fur, and look nearly identical to the originals.

These are easily the most affordable option, ringing in between $55 and $90 each, depending on styles and sales. They offer several vegan styles, including:

  • Ugg-Style Boots (short, medium, and tall)
  • Buckled Ugg Boots
  • Ugg-Like Slippers
  • Fleece-Lined Chukka Boots
Fuzzy leather-free faux-fur lined vegan slippers from the brand Bearpaw.

PAWJ (100% Vegan Brand)

Billing themselves as a luxury ethical footwear brand that emphasizes craftsmanship and comfort. Based in California, they offer an extensive line of colors and styles for boots that make UGGs look downright plain.

Zette Shoes

Produced by Vegan-Style from Melbourne, Australia, which makes all sorts of sustainable, environmentally conscious, and plant-based accessories.

The “Willow” slipper boot is a dead-ringer for the classic UGG styling, but made with microfiber and faux shearling (another word for lamb skin) instead of sheep. These boots cost $229 AUD.

Vegetarian Shoes (100% Vegan Brand)

More accurately described as vegan, this UK company has Snugge Boots that can make you forge all about conventional UGGs. True to their name, they have a snug fit and grippy rubber and cork soles, so you won’t miss a single step.

Muk Luks

Muk Luks makes everything cozy—from socks, to cabin slippers, to ugg-style boots. And many of their boots are vegan! With their help, you can surround feet with soft faux fur, with a vegan suede upper that’s water resistant and will keep your toes dry and warm all season long.

Most of their boots run in the $40 – $80 range, and they often have sales.

Will’s Vegan Store (100% Vegan Brand)

This versatile boot is insulated like UGGs but with the protection from rain, mud, and snow that you’d get from wellies. Everything in their shop is vegan so you can rest assured knowing that whichever boot or shoe you choose will be cruelty-free and made from high-quality synthetic materials. Plus, everything they make is carbon-neutral!

City Beach

This Australian retailer sells a variety of UGG-looking slipper boots. Many are made with faux suede and faux fur linings, just make sure to double check the details before purchasing. Both the Mooloola and Sleepy Squirrel brands sold at City Beach have vegan options!

Big Box Stores

Many big box stores like Target, JCPenney’s, DSW, and more have their own house brand footwear with similar styling at greatly discounted prices. Always read through the listed materials carefully before purchasing to make sure you’re getting something that’s both stylish and compassionate.

You can also find dozens of other cozy and faux-fur-lined boots from countless brands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is Sheepskin So Bad?

If you love dogs, you’d love sheep, and you certainly wouldn’t want them to wear on your feet. Sheep are smart, sensitive, and rational, capable of learning basic commands and understanding their names. That’s better than many temperamental companion animals that struggle with house training, but still deserve just as much love!

What Are The Best Materials For Vegan Shoes?

There’s a growing list of great vegan options for high-quality, durable, and stylish vegan shoes on the market. A few you can expect to find include:

·        Canvas
·        Microfiber
·        Polyurethane or PU leather
·        Hemp
·        Cotton
·        GORE-TEX
·        PIÑATEX
·        Cork
·        Natural rubber
·        Fleece
·        Faux suede
·        Polyester
·        Recycled plastic

Can Vegan UGG Boots Get Wet?

Most UGG-style vegan alternatives are designed to be weather-resistant, which means they can keep your toes dry and warm through rain and snow. Bear in mind that they’re not fully waterproof, however, which means you shouldn’t go splashing through deep puddles in them.

How Long Do The Best Vegan UGGs Last?

Everyone has different demands for their shoes so it’s tough to predict the overall lifespan for any given material. With proper care, you can expect your boots to last anywhere from 2 to 5 years, on average. To enhance longevity, always keep them in a dry, cool place, and keep them clean by wiping with a damp cloth, rather than submerging them in water.

Where Can I Buy Vegan UGGs?

It might be tough to find vegan alternatives to UGG boots in stores since it’s an unfortunately specialized request. Your best bet is to shop online, either directly through manufacturer’s websites or through verified resellers. Be careful of no-name brands shipping from overseas; there’s little oversight in terms of quality control. It’s a gamble as to what you’re actually getting most of the time.

Choosing to eat vegan is a powerful way to help animals, our planet, and our own health. But the vegan lifestyle is based on a philosophy of minimizing harm, and that can span far beyond the food we put on our plates!

To lead a holistically compassionate lifestyle, you’ll also want to examine the ingredients in your personal care products, cleaning products, and even clothing and shoes, as animal products can sneak into all of these. A little bit of attention and research can ensure that there are no animal-derived ingredients in the products you purchase. After all, we vote with our dollars!

Speaking of vegan shoes, who doesn’t love a nice pair of boots? They’re so versatile. No matter what your style or the occasion, you can find a pair of boots to wear. Rainy weather, throw on a pair of rain boots. Want to look tough? Just grab some combat boots. Athletes about to climb a mountain can throw on a pair of hiking boots, and fashionistas can pair some booties or thigh high boots with the cutest outfit.

Many designer boots, as well as boots found in everyday stores, are either made from leather or may contain animal glue or other materials. But don’t worry, dear friend. You do not have to sacrifice your style to live an ethically aligned life. There are plenty of vegan boot options out there for every occasion!

Vegan boots guide.

What Makes a Boot a Vegan Boot?

Shoes can be made from a whole variety of manmade materials (like vinyl), natural materials (like cotton), animal skins (like leather or suede), and animal-derived materials (like certain shoe glues). Here are the four main elements of boots that you’ll need to pay attention to as you search for the best vegan boots.

Vegan Shoe Glue

The only material that you’ll find consistently in mostly all shoes is: adhesive.

Adhesive is used to glue soles to shoes and accessories, labels, patches, etc. onto shoes. There are plenty of adhesives that are simply man-made glues, and because these adhesives are cheaper to make, it is very common for shoe companies to use these vegan friendly adhesives.

However, some glues and other adhesives do contain bugs, or various animal proteins extracted from bones, tendons, and skin. While now an uncommon practice, animal-based adhesives do still exist.

Soles and Insoles

Soles, insoles, as well as the actual shoe portion can be made from materials such as cotton, various plastics, rubber, wool, fur, silk, suede, and leather. Wool, various animal fur (angora is a fancy word for rabbit fur), silk, and leather (and suede which is a form of leather) are not vegan ingredients, as they are made or taken from sheep and cows, and other animals. If that sounds “a little extreme” — take a look at this article about why wool isn’t vegan.

Plant-Based Pigments and Dyes

Finally, certain pigments used to dye fabrics used to make various parts of shoes can be animal-derived. For instance, some red pigment, called carmine, comes from the blood of a bug called a cochineal louse. Bone black pigment is made by charring animal bones and can make black and gray pigment. Sepia is a dark brown pigment that comes from cuttlefish ink.

A vegan shoe or boot does not use any of the above (or any we may have missed) animal derived ingredients.

Where To Find Vegan Boots

Many large chain retailers like Target, DSW, Ross, Marshalls, Nordstrom, Macys, Walmart, Payless, Zappos, Free People, etc. carry boots that can be vegan, if they don’t include any animal materials or glues.

There are also well-known shoe brands that make a selection of vegan friendly boots, including Dr. Martens and Clarks. However, if you want to shop with ease, check out one of the many entirely vegan brands listed below.

Nothing is ugglier than boots that took the life of a sweet, innocent animal. Can we all agree on that? Whether or not you jumped on the Ugg trend when it swept across the world in the early 2000s, one thing is for sure. Uggs are a whole lot cozier when you know you’re not stepping into someone else’s skin.

Lucky for all the Uggs lovers out there, there are countless vegan Uggs boots to choose from. These options don’t come from the Ugg brand itself (please don’t support them!) but from vegan-friendly brands that have created very similar designs using far more ethical materials.

One of the most popular brands that carries Vegan Uggs is Bearpaw. They have a whole line of vegan-labeled Ugg-style boots, but note that they also carry sheepskin suede.

You can also occasionally find very affordable vegan Ugg boots at stores like Target and Payless.

Vegan Hiking Boots

Whether you’re ready to scale mountains or just kick back by the river, vegan hiking boots will come in handy! Check out our guide to the best vegan hiking boots to see some great options. You can also explore the brands above, like Astral, which carries both men’s and women’s vegan hiking boots to choose from!

Are Faux Leather Boots Vegan?

You can absolutely still enjoy leather boots in an animal-friendly — simply choose faux leather!

100% PU Leather is a great vegan alternative to real animal leather. However, PU leather not marked 100%, as well as materials marked “bonded leather” can be made from pieces of leather glued together and then covered with a coating of polyurethane. Visiting company websites is very helpful when dealing with an unknown brand, to determine if the faux leather used is 100% vegan.

Luckily, many shoes will be clearly labeled with an “All Manmade Materials” label indicating that they are made without leather. And even better than that, vegan shoe companies are sprouting up all around the world bringing beautiful 100% vegan shoes to the scene. You can find a list of these vegan boot brands below!

Are Faux Fur Boots Vegan?

Most faux fur is just that – fake! And in this case, fake is so much more beautiful than the real thing. Leave the fur to the animals it belongs to, and choose manmade furry materials instead.

Companies manufacture faux fur from blends of acrylic and other synthetic materials.

It’s worth noting, however, that there have been some instances where companies were mislabeling real fur as faux fur, leading to all kinds of accidental ethical mishaps. Companies have also used things like dog hair and hair from small rodents mixed in (or entirely) to make the items look and feel more “realistic.”

For this reason, you might want to look a little deeper than the label if you are committed to boycotting fur entirely. Thankfully, many companies are specifically labeling their faux fur as “vegan” or “vegan faux fur.”

Are Vegan Boots Low Quality?

Just because boots are made without leather, wool, animal dyes, silk, and animal glues does not mean you have to sacrifice the quality of your boots. Many top designers are leaning toward cruelty-free practices and vegan materials. Stella McCartney, Jill Milan, and Matt & Nat are all fully vegan designers, to name just a few.

Designers are not only vowing to eliminate fur, but many are also now saying that they will be phasing out animal skin as well.

But you do get what you pay for. If you shop in the Walmart or Payless shoe section, you can find some great accidentally vegan boots. But they may not last as long as a higher-quality vegan boot brand that is made to last; not just to sell off the shelves.

That said, if you don’t have a designer-sized pocketbook, you can certainly find great looking off-brand or everyday-brand vegan boots.

The secret to making your vegan boots last a long time is the same as with leather boots. Many vegan leather materials and other fabrics require the same cleaning, conditioning and care that real leather requires to make them last. As long as you properly clean, care for, and store your vegan boots, they should last you a long time! I have a pair of boots from Wills Vegan Shoes that is nearly 10 years old and is still going strong.

Are Vegan Boots Better or Worse for the Environment?

While it can be argued that the process and materials used to manufacture vegan boots and shoes puts a strain on natural resources and the environment, animal agriculture has been proven to be the leading cause of global warming and biggest strain on natural resources like land and water, as well as on food availability. Connecting those dots simply means that using animals for clothing is worse for the environment than manufacturing faux versions.

Overall, vegan boots are just as comfortable and stylish, can be found for any occasion, activity, or job, as well as budget. They are kinder to animals, generally more affordable, and better for the environment.

When winter rolls around, many turn to wool to stay warm. While a wool hat or scarf may provide some heat for the person wearing it, the reality for sheep is unfortunately much less warm and fuzzy. So if you’re wondering “Is wool vegan?” or “Do vegans wear wool?”, we’re here to break it down.

Here are 8 compelling reasons why you should stick to clothing made from vegan fabrics and plant-derived materials and choose to knit with vegan yarn (or “acrylic yarn”), and why being vegan means letting wool stay on sweet and sensitive sheep.

Call us crazy, but we don’t want someone shaving our hair off without our permission because it would make them a nice coat or a pair of socks.

But when it comes to sheep, it’s not unreasonable to think that these fluffy-haired creatures could probably use a haircut every now and again. And why not put all that sheared wool to good use in sweaters, socks, hats, blankets, and beyond to keep us warm?

It’s making use of something that would otherwise go to waste, isn’t it?

Well, not quite.

Pastel colored vegan yarn.

Common Wool Assumptions

You may assume that:

  • Sheep don’t have to be killed to shear their wool
  • Sheep need haircuts, so we’re doing them a favor
  • The shearing process is painless—like getting a haircut!
  • We need wool to keep warm

You are not alone, as I at one time thought these things too. Sadly, as I learned more about the wool industry, I realized that all of these assumptions are way off base.

Sure, sheep don’t necessarily have to be killed in order for their wool to be trimmed. And the shearing process usually only takes a few minutes.

But just because the shearing process is relatively quick doesn’t mean that it’s a painless or untraumatic experience for the millions of sheep who are coarsely sheared each year for the sake of making clothing. And in almost all cases, the sheep used for wool are eventually sent to slaughter.

There are hundreds of reasons why people everywhere should abandon wool. We make it easy with our vegan knitting guide and article all about vegan yarn! But if you need some convincing, we’ve collected 8 of the most pressing that explain why wool isn’t as innocent as you think and why it no longer deserves a place in your closet.

drawing of a feminine-presenting person with long brown hair knitting a scarf from a wool connected to a sheep that has tears in their eyes, with some of their wool visibly gone from their body and a text bubble that says "what's wrong with wool?"

Is Wool Vegan?

No, wool is not vegan. Since veganism is a lifestyle that aims to avoid all animal-derived products including food, clothing, and cosmetics as well as forms of entertainment and sport that use animals, and wool is an animal product, wool is inherently not vegan.

Vegan Wool Alternatives

Vegan wool can be made of a variety of materials including:

  • Bamboo: Bamboo fiber is known for its softness and moisture-wicking properties, creating a wool-like texture that’s gentle on the skin.
  • Cotton: Sourced from cotton plants, it’s soft, breathable, and biodegradable, making it a versatile and eco-friendly choice for vegan wool.
  • Linen: Linen, made from flax fibers, is known for its breathability and natural luster, providing an animal-free alternative to wool.
  • Hemp: Hemp fabric is durable, eco-friendly, and offers natural insulation, making it a valuable option for vegan wool enthusiasts.
  • Rayon: Often derived from plant cellulose, rayon is a versatile vegan wool material that can imitate the texture and feel of traditional wool, offering a cruelty-free option for eco-conscious consumers.
  • Nylon: Although not a plant-based material, nylon can be produced using recycled or sustainable practices, reducing its environmental impact and providing a vegan-friendly alternative.
  • Nettle: Nettle fiber is made from the stalks of the stinging nettle plant. It produces a fine, silky yarn that can be used as a vegan wool substitute, offering a unique and sustainable choice.

Wool-Free Vegan Outerwear Brands

Wool can make its way into all sorts of products: from hats and blankets to women’s peacoats and men’s suits. Luckily, there are cruelty-free versions of all of these! These days, it’s easy to stay warm in ethically made clothing from conscious brands.

Some awesome vegan outerwear brands to look out for include:

We also put together a vegan wool socks guide to help your feet stay warm in the winter.

Of course, you can also find all sorts of “accidentally vegan” products that just so happen to be wool-free. Shopping at budget-friendly stores like Target make that particularly easy as animal-derived fabrics tend to be significantly more expensive. Just be sure to check the label on any products you buy!

8 Reasons Why Wool Isn’t Vegan

Let’s go further in depth about the major issues with the large-scale wool industry:

1. The Cruel Practice of Mulesing

Most of the world’s wool comes from Australia. In Australia, most commercially grown sheep undergo a painful process called mulesing. Mulesing is an extremely painful procedure in which chunks of skin around a sheep’s tail are roughly chopped off (without anesthetic, mind you).

This is done because the wool in this fluffy booty area can otherwise become dirtied and infested. Urine, feces, and dirt can build up and lead to a maggot infestation called flystrike. Flies are often attracted to this moist and dirty wool, leading them to hatch their eggs there. These eggs typically hatch within 24 hours, after which the maggots will feed on the sheep’s skin for up to three days, putting the sheep at high risk for death if their flystrike isn’t treated.

While this may sound like an attempt to save our sheep friends from an agonizing death, it seldom is. Mulesing is often performed without any painkillers, with research suggesting that the excruciating pain from mulesing can last up to 48 hours.

Mulesing is so cruel that in 2018 New Zealand banned it altogether. In New Zealand, you can now be persecuted as a convicted criminal for mulesing a sheep. You’ll be fined $5000 (if you’re an individual) and $25,000 (if you’re a corporation).

Nevertheless, mulesing is not an illegal practice throughout most of the world. If you’ve purchased wool items (which I’m sure we all have), it’s likely you’ve been unknowingly supporting this practice.

2. We Bred Sheep To Have Wrinkles

After reading about mulesing, you might think: well, yes it’s painful. But it’s preventing flystrike and other issues that can ultimately harm the sheep, so it sounds necessary. Causing one harm to prevent another kind-of evens out, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, we need to consider that this isn’t a problem inherent to sheep in their natural form. Today’s farmed sheep have been purposefully bred to have extremely wrinkly skin so that they’ll produce more wool than they ever would have without human intervention.

After all, extra wrinkly sheep = more wool = more money for producers.

On the surface, the wrinkly sheep we’ve created through selective breeding sound innocent enough—and extra-adorable!

But unfortunately, it is due in no small part to having this wrinkly skin that sheep are now forced to undergo mulesing in order to make them less susceptible to flystrike.

3. We Bred Sheep to Produce Wool Continually

Sheep existed independent of humans long before we came along and decided to domesticate and farm them. And before we intervened, sheep never got sheared…and guess what? They were doing just fine.

Take a look at wild sheep. You’ll notice that many periodically shed their wool. And no, they don’t overheat or have trouble moving around from excess wool. Those issues are human-caused problems that arose as a result of an agricultural industry acting without concern for the wellbeing of the animals.

But we’ve bred domesticated sheep to grow wool year-round, making it all but unavoidable that they will have to undergo the process of shearing multiple times in their lifetime.

4. Handled Without Care

It’s not uncommon for sheep shearers to be paid by the volume of wool they shear, not their hourly labor. This, in turn, can lead to shearers handling each sheep as quickly as possible, often with little to no regard for the sheep’s physical and emotional well-being.

While the details are quite gruesome, PETA’s landmark 2014 exposé showed how cruelly many sheep are treated by shearers, as did a 2018 report from a sheep shearer who worked in the United States and Australia.

Among other things, witnesses reported that sheep were tossed around and slammed onto hard floors. They had their heads and necks stepped on and received cuts on multiple parts of their body.

While the exposé is certainly unsettling, it is a wake-up call that many of us need that most commercially-available wool products are not cruelty-free or ethically-sourced.

5. Sheep Are Often Starved Prior to Shearing

According to an article by PETA, it’s not uncommon for sheep to not be given any food or water up to 24 hours before being sheared so that they’ll be more docile while being sheared.

Imagine how frightening it must be to undergo shearing as a defenseless animal. Now magnify that fear by knowing that you’re not physically or mentally strong enough to escape. You don’t have the energy to protect yourself. How would you feel?

6. Many Undergo Painful Castration & Tail Docking

When male sheep are just a few weeks old, it’s not uncommon for them to be castrated. This is done to avoid unplanned pregnancies and make the males less aggressive.

One popular means of castration involves putting a tight rubber band around the testicles. The blood supply will be cut off so that the testicles will eventually wither and fall off after a few weeks.

Sheep also often endure tail docking at a young age. This is commonly done using either a rubber ring or a hot iron blade. Both techniques are known to be painful, yet they are still commonly performed and considered to be an industry standard.

7. Females Undergo Painful Forced Insemination

As with other commercially-grown livestock, it’s not uncommon for female sheep to be artificially inseminated.

One method involves sticking a metal rod into a sheep’s abdomen so that the semen can be inserted into her uterus. Not only can this procedure be invasive and frightening, but it’s also often done without painkillers.

8. A Sheep’s Trip to Slaughter Is Horrendous

Unfortunately, many sheep are mistreated again in the days leading up to their deaths.

For example, each year thousands of sheep are crammed onto trucks for hours or days at a time or transported to overseas markets on multi-tiered ships. Oftentimes they aren’t given sufficient food and are exposed to unregulated conditions, leading many to die or fall ill before arriving at their final destination.

Is It Possible to Source Ethical Wool?

In theory if you had your own companion animal sheep and gave them a haircut as a part of their care, and used that hair to make yarn, it is theoretically possible to obtain cruelty-free wool. The issue is that unless you are raising, caring for, and shearing the sheep yourself, there is no way to know with certainty that wool was obtained in a truly humane way.

Furthermore, as soon as wool turns from sheep’s hair into a commodity sold for profit, the care and wellbeing of the sheep is no longer the only priority, and as with any good business, the goal is to reduce costs and that often comes at the expense of the animals involved. Whenever an animal product is sold for profit, especially on a large scale, it is likely not as “innocent” and “humane” as it appears to be on the store shelf.

Some vegans might say that there is no way to obtain wool without it being exploitative on some level. Others may say that wool repurposed from rescued sheep who are cared for as animal companions and never sent to slaughter at the end of their life fits within their identity of vegan. Wherever you fall on the spectrum is fine — there is no such thing as a “perfect vegan” and for complicated topics such as this, there are different schools of thought, and that’s okay!

But I image we can all agree that mainstream wool is not animal-friendly, nor vegan, for all of the reasons we’re about to share.

How To Help Sheep in the Wool Industry

We know that after reading this article you’re probably feeling a little bummed out. Or perhaps even angry that the wool industry can be so abusive to innocent animals. But we strongly encourage you to channel these feelings into something positive and constructive.

If you want to help, you can:

  • Promise yourself that you won’t buy wool-containing products anymore and will choose cruelty-free options instead.
  • If you love to knit, choose vegan yarn (check out our vegan knitting guide)
  • Write a letter (or email) to your favorite brands asking them to replace the wool in their products with cruelty-free alternatives.
  • Educate friends and family about why wool isn’t cruelty-free (you can share this article to start!)

Whatever you do, remember that you can cause great change in the world with your thoughts and actions, and there’s no better time to start than today.

Wool FAQs

Is acrylic yarn vegan?

Yes! Acrylic yarn is completely animal-free and is made of synthetic fibers.

Is cashmere vegan?

Since cashmere is obtained from goats, it is not vegan.

How can I make sure I’m buying vegan wool?

Be sure to check the tag of whichever item you’re interested in. Fibers such as acrylic, fleece, and rayon are all vegan! Other common words for wool are vicuna, tweed, Angora, mohair, and merino so make sure to steer clear of those.

How Can I Tell if Products Are Cruelty-Free?

One topic that might be confusing at first is whether products are cruelty-free, vegan, or both. Although these terms are similar, they’re not the same. A beauty product that is cruelty-free is not necessarily vegan. Let’s go deeper and simplify things:

What does vegan mean?

Vegan means that the product is made without any ingredients that come from an animal, including animal derivatives (like honey and beeswax) and coloring agents or dyes (like those made from crushed beetles). You can also explore our “What is a vegan?” guide to learn more.

What does cruelty-free mean?

Cruelty-free means that the products were produced without the use of animal testing or experimentation (also known as vivisection).

What About Parent Companies?

Parent companies are single companies that have a controlling interest in another company (or multiple) companies, including smaller spin-off companies or ones acquired from a take-over or merger.

Many vegan and cruelty-free beauty brands have parent companies that are not vegan or cruelty-free. It’s up to you to decide if that’s a company you want to support or not. There’s both a good side and bad side to that issue.

On one hand, buying beauty products from these types of companies can really help. Your decision to buy shows that the consumer wants products without any animal-based ingredients or horribly painful and inhumane testing. On the other hand, you have to come to terms with ultimately supporting a company that makes its profits from exploiting animals.

Luckily, every year, more and more parent companies are going cruelty-free (and sometimes vegan!) due to customer demand. Let’s hope that the future is full of only vegan beauty products!

Vegan Labels and Cruelty-Free Bunny Logos

Leaping Bunny Certified

When you see the Leaping Bunny symbol, it means you can be sure that the product is truly cruelty-free. The testing for certification is exacting and and guarantees that any goods with this label “are free of animal testing at all stages of product development“. Not only is Leaping Bunny internationally recognized, it is a simple and easy way to recognize if a beauty (or household) item is cruelty-free.

PETA Certified Cruelty Free

According to the PETA website, they consider companies to be “cruelty-free” (under their Global Beauty Without Bunnies program) only under these specific conditions: they “must not only ban animal tests but also refuse to use any animal-derived ingredients, such as honey, beeswax, or carmine, in its products.”

Unofficial Cruelty-Free Logos

If you don’t see these specific logos or symbols, be wary! There aren’t always laws to prevent companies from adding their own labels. They may look similar but, really, wouldn’t mean a thing. Keep an eye out for the real thing. You can also download apps to your phone such as Bunny Free (by PETA), Cruelty-Free (by Leaping Bunny), or Cruelty-Cutter (by The Beagle Freedom Project) to double check brands.

Which Mainstream Beauty Brands Are Cruelty-Free?

Is Cover Girl Cruelty-Free?

Yes, Covergirl has been Leaping Bunny Approved! Though they do have a new vegan-friendly line of products, many (if not most) are not vegan.

Is L’Oreal cruelty free?

As the parent of company of many beauty brands, L’Oreal is NOT cruelty-free. They do not participate in animal testing in their own labs, but they do allow their products to be tested on animals in order to sell them in mainland China.

I know this brand has vegan-friendly options, but is NYX cruelty-free?

Yes, NYX is now PETA certified as cruelty-free! They have many vegan-friendly products, but they are not entirely vegan. Their parent company, L’Oreal, is not cruelty-free.

I’m confused. Is now Maybelline cruelty-free?

No. Maybelline is another makeup company that (like their parent company L’Oreal) does not test on animals in house, but sells their products to places that have mandatory animal testing requirements. Because of this, Maybelline is not cruelty-free.

Is CeraVe cruelty free?

No, they’re not. Although CeraVe themselves do not test on animals, they sell their products on mainland China and allow their finished products to be tested on animals.

Is Cetaphil cruelty-free?

No, it’s not. As with L’Oreal and other large beauty corporations, this company allows their products to be tested on animals so that they can be sold on mainland China.

My go-to brand has always been Neutrogena. Is Neutrogena cruelty-free?

Sadly, no. While Neutrogena themselves do not test on animals, the company exports their beauty products to mainland China, who require animal testing by law. So, they are not cruelty-free.

Is Nars cruelty-free?

No, they’re not cruelty-free. This beauty brand allows their products to be sold to countries that require animal testing by law (such as mainland China), so they cannot be considered cruelty-free.

My mother has always bought this one brand. Is Clinique cruelty-free?

Unfortunately, no. Clinique (along with parent company, Estee Lauder) agrees to have their products tested on animals when required by law, as in mainland China. This company is not cruelty-free.

Is Aveeno cruelty-free?

No. Aveeno permits its products and/or ingredients to be tested on animals when required by law by other countries. Even though they do not test on animals themselves, they still cannot be considered free of cruelty.

Envision a world where nail polish isn’t just about vibrant colors to match your personality and mood and long-lasting shine—but also about ethics, healthy ingredients, and compassion. Here, a startling truth emerges: within many mainstream nail polishes lies a concealed secret—a disturbing cocktail of harmful chemicals, toxins, and even notorious carcinogens like formaldehyde. To make matters worse, many polish brands utilize animal testing, and a handful may shock you by containing animal or insect-derived ingredients.

Join us as we embark on this colorful journey into a world where conscious beauty meets vibrant, ethically-aligned nails, setting a new standard for vegan-certified beauty brands, ethical and eco-conscious fashion, and consciously crafted nail care.

What is Vegan & Cruelty-Free Nail Polish?

When it comes to nail polish, you’ll want to look for two—or ideally 3—things.

  1. It’s made without any animal products
  2. The polish is cruelty-free, meaning it was produce without the use of animal testing
  3. It’s natural (or “healthy”), and made without the top toxins and carcinogens commonly found in nail polishes (such as formaldehyde).

Some brands that are not vegan do offer vegan-friendly nail polish options (like 100% Pure, which is mostly vegan, but not entirely). Other brands that have vegan options are not cruelty-free (they may test on animals here in the U.S. or sell their products in China where animal testing is required).

Since we’re entering a time when there is such a plethora of options out there, I’m only including nail polish brands that offer a 100% vegan line of polishes on the list below.

Kids Nail Polish

Painting nails can be a really fun activity for kids—but it’s important to find options that are not only cruelty-free, but also non-toxic and safe for little ones.

The most notable kids nail polish brand is Piggy Paint, which they call as “natural as mud.” We’ve tested Piggy Paint nail polish with lots of kids and little hands, and they’ve all loved it. This polish is not meant to be long lasting—but rather a fun activity that can easily come off without nail polish remover if desired.

Nail Polish Removers

When you switch to more natural nail polish, you may as well switch to more conscious polish remover as well. After all, we vote with our dollars! Here are a few of the vegan options that exist today. You can order many of these online, find them at natural foods stores, and even at grocery stores like Sprouts and Whole Foods.

A Few of My Favorite Nail Polish Brands

I filmed a video sharing some of the vegan-friendly nail polish brands I’ve tried and my thoughts about each. Watch below!

Vegan nail polish was once nearly impossible to find, but today dozens of brands have sprouted up changing the game in the nail decor industry. These days you can even find entire nail salons that are cruelty-free, or at the very leave offer vegan and cruelty-free nail polish options!

There is an eco-friendly nail salon down the street from me in Sacramento that has an entire wall of cruelty-free nail polishes to choose from. In fact, everything they use in the salon (such as nail polish remover and lotion) is cruelty-free and natural. If you can support those more conscious salons, all the better!

But if you go to a salon you’re not familiar with or you know is not particularly vegan-friendly, you can always bring your own polish with you and they are generally happy to use that. Want bonus points? Leave them with a polite request to carry some vegan polishes in the future. It’s sure to help their business as much as it will help you!

If you’re looking for your sneaker sole-mate but also care about animals and the environment, you’re in luck! Vegan sneakers are becoming more and more popular, with a ton of fun and flashy (or sane and sensible) options to choose from. Whether you’re into classic canvas slip-ons, high-performance running shoes, or anything in between, there’s a vegan sneaker out there for you.

Not only are plant-based materials more sustainable, they’re also cruelty-free. Shopping for vegan sneakers is a kind and compassionate (and also fashionable!) choice for anyone who wants to reduce their impact on the earth and the amount of animal cruelty in the world. So, let’s lace up our vegan sneakers and get ready to step out in style while doing our part for the planet!

What Makes Sneakers Not Vegan?

When you think of sneakers, you might not immediately think of animal products. Sadly, many athletic shoes are constructed entirely of animal-based materials. Here are some of the materials you should avoid when shopping for sneakers:

  • Animal-Based Glue
  • Coated Leather
  • Leather
  • Silk
  • Suede
  • Wool

Keep in mind that some sneaker brands may test their products on animals or use suppliers who engage in unethical practices. That’s why it’s so important to do your research and seek out brands that make animal welfare and sustainability a top priority.

Vegan Sneaker Materials

Vegan sneakers may not be made of leather, but that doesn’t mean they’re lacking in style or substance. There are more and more brilliant and exciting options for shoe-making materials on the market every day. The best thing is, many of them are plant-based or procured from commercial products that might have gone to the dump otherwise (like old fishing nets and plastic bottles). Yay for reducing, reusing and recycling!

  • Canvas
  • Cork
  • Hemp
  • Microfiber
  • Natural or Recycled Rubber
  • Organic Cotton
  • Plant-Based Leather (apples, bananas, pineapple, mushroom, etc.)
  • PU (Polyurethane)
  • Recycled Fishing Nets
  • Recycled Plastic

When you’re ready to swap out your current kicks for a vegan-friendly option, you can feel good knowing that your feet are sporting some seriously cool, compassionate, and eco-friendly materials!

Are you looking for a wallet that is both stylish and ethical? If so, we’re here to help you find the perfect vegan wallet. Vegan wallets can be made from a wide variety of materials, such as recycled plastic, cork, and even pineapple leaves, and are 100% free from animal products. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to carry their cash in something made from pineapple leaves? It’s like a tropical vacation every time you open your wallet.

But wait, it gets even better! Many vegan wallet brands prioritize fair labor practices, so you can feel good about supporting ethical fashion. It’s a win-win situation: you get a stylish accessory that aligns with your values, and the planet, animals, and people get a break, too. So go ahead and make the switch to vegan wallets–your wallet and the animals will thank you!

What is a Vegan Wallet?

A vegan wallet is a wallet that is made without the use of any animal products. That means you’re buying an accessory that contains no leather, fur, or other animal-derived materials in the making and construction. You’ll discover a whole new world of plant-based materials, like cork, recycled plastic, and synthetic fibers.

Why Choose a Vegan Wallet?

The most important reason for not choosing a traditional wallet is that vegan wallets are cruelty-free. This means that no animals were harmed or killed in order to produce them. If you care about animal welfare and want to make ethical choices in your daily life, this is the way to go.

As well as being cruelty-free, vegan wallets can also be environmentally-friendly. Leather production is horrible. It’s notoriously a resource-intensive industry that contributes to deforestation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing a wallet that is made of plants or synthetic materials, you can reduce your environmental impact and support sustainable manufacturing practices.

In addition, they are often way more affordable than their leather counterparts. Yay! You can save money without sacrificing style or quality by buying man-made or plant-based materials instead.

What Materials Are Used To Make Vegan Wallets?

You may discover that a wide variety of materials can be used to make vegan wallets. Some of the most popular options you may find include:

Cork: Cork is a natural and sustainable material that is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees. It is lightweight, durable, and water-resistant, making it an excellent choice for wallets.

Mylo: A leather alternative made from renewable mycelium, the underground root structure of mushrooms. It offers the same look, feel, versatility of traditional, but without the environmental impact.

Recycled Plastic: Many companies are now using recycled plastic bottles to create a range of products, including wallets. A great way to reduce waste and promote recycling!

Synthetic Fibers: Synthetic materials such as polyester or nylon can be highly durable and are often water-resistant.

Whether you’re looking for sustainable sneakers, hide-less heels, fur-free flats, sheep-sanctioned slippers, satin stilettos, fashionable vegan leather boots, the best vegan hiking boots, or any other style of footwear, you can find the perfect pair without harming a soul.

Below we’ve included a list of the most popular fully-vegan shoe brands. You’ll also find a round-up of vegan-friendly brands that offer at least some vegan shoes. And finally, we suggest a few Big Box stores that are likely to carry “accidentally vegan” shoes—an option that’s especially useful if you’re shopping on a budget.

If you’d like to dive deeper into boots specifically, check out these guides:

Speaking of which, don’t forget about secondhand shops! Buying shoes secondhand may not be for everyone, but it is the most sustainable option of all, and it will save you money, too! Plan a fun excursion to your local thrift store and see what treasures you can find. Or, hop over to an online thrift store like ThredUp where you can browse available footwear (and clothing) to your hearts content.

What Are Vegan Shoes?

If the idea of “vegan shoes” seems a little bizarre to you—since, well, shoes aren’t food—let us take a moment to explain.

Those who choose to live a vegan lifestyle in an effort to avoid harm soon learn that it’s necessary to look beyond our food choices. Cosmetics, body care, cleaning products, home goods, and clothing are all areas that require examination.

In the simplest terms, vegan shoes are shoes made without any animal products or by-products. No animal hide, leather, suede, wool, fur, snakeskin, alligator skin, other varieties of skins, or glues made from animal parts. If a shoe doesn’t contain any animal products it is technically vegan. But beyond that, many vegans look for shoe brands that have ethical business practices, are sustainable, and are consciously produced.

100% Vegan Shoe Brands

Today it’s easier than ever to find comfortable, stylish, well-made vegan shoes. Brands like Wills Vegan Shoes in London and MooShoes in New York City have been leading the way in making ethical and sustainable shoes available to the masses. What a time to be alive!

Here are the most notable brands that exist today. Many of these brands are vegan-owned, and while some come with a heftier price tag, you can step into their shoes proudly knowing that you’re supporting a company with strong ethics.

100% Vegan Shops That Carry Shoes

Fortunately, for those who want to extend their values into fashion, there are now many 100% vegan shops that offer a wide variety of shoes from made without animal products or byproducts. These shops specialize in ethical fashion, and their collections of brands are curated for you, so you don’t have to do the detective work to determine whether a shoe is in fact vegan.

Vegan-Friendly Shoe Brands

These brands are not fully vegan, but they do offer some clearly-labeled vegan options.

Shops That Carry “Accidentally Vegan Shoes”

  • DSW
  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Payless

…and many more large chain retailers with generally lower-cost items. Unfortunately it will be nearly impossible to determine what type of glue is used in these shoes (read more on this below). While shoes at these stores that are labeled “synthetic” or “all man made” are likely vegan, there is a small chance they are made with animal-based glues.

Shopping from a vegan brand is of course the most ideal, but few people are in a position to invest that much in their shoes. Make the choice that feels best for you and your family.

Vegan Birkenstocks

In 2017 Birkenstock launched an entire line of vegan Birkenstocks including many of their most popular styles. These are made from microfiber, jute, cork, and manmade Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), and are available in many colors and prints. If hippie living is in your blood, these are calling you! Vegan Birkenstocks range from $70 – $115 brand new, but occasionally you can find items from The Vegan Collection on sale or used.

Dr. Marten’s Vegan Shoes

Have you been dreaming of vegan Doc Martens? Well, dear reader, you can have your choice of animal-friendly Dr. Marten’s—from the classic lace up boots and platform boots to oxford shoes and gladiator sandals. They range in price from around $90 to $200 new, but if you’re lucky you can snag a well cared for pair secondhand.

Materials Used to Make Vegan Shoes

Say farewell to animal leather, reptile skin, and fur. No thank you! Animals need their skin far more than our feet do—especially when there is such an exciting array of plant-based and manmade materials used to make vegan shoes. Here are a few of the most common:

  • Acrylic
  • Bamboo
  • Canvas, Corduroy, and Denim
  • Cork
  • Cotton
  • Nylon
  • Polyester
  • Polyurethane, Pleather, and Recycled Plastic
  • Rubber
  • Vegan leather and pineapple leather, mushroom leather, apple leather, leaf leather, and more.
  • Vegan suede and microsuede

What About The Glue In Shoes?

You may have heard that most shoe glue contains animal collagen and therefore isn’t vegan. And you are partially right. Yes, there are animal-based glues made from various animal parts and by-products such as bones, skin, ligaments, and flesh. And yes, these animal glues were once the main source of glue used in shoes. However, today it’s becoming less common for brands to use animal-based glues—thank god!

There are many synthetic adhesive glues available now that companies like Converse, New Balance, and Nike are turning to (all three claim to use exclusively animal-free glues).

But here’s the tricky part. How can you tell if a pair of shoes is made with vegan glue or animal glue? Unfortunately, in most cases you can’t simply by looking at the shoes. Even a detailed visual inspection with careful label-reading and website scrutinizing won’t reveal what the shoe glue is made from. So, you do what vegans have become so adept at doing. Ask the company!

Here’s a sample message for you to use.

Hi friends at [Company],

I absolutely adore your shoes! I’m hoping you can help me find out if there are any animal products in the adhesives (glues) used in your shoes? I’m vegan and want to make sure the glues are fully vegan before I place my order. Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Contacting a company in this way will not only help you get to the bottom of your quandary, but it will also demonstrate to them that their customers care about these issues and are actively seeking consciously produced animal-friendly shoes. Many companies have shifted their practices because of customer messages like this—they can make a world of difference for animals.

What Can I Do With My Old Non-Vegan Shoes?

This can be a tough deliberation for new vegans—because once you’re aware of the suffering that goes into producing a pair of leather shoes, it’s hard to wear them anymore. But the deed is done, you’ve purchased the shoes already, and now you’ve worn them and they’re used.

There is no “one right way” to handle your previously purchased non-vegan shoes—but there is a wrong way, as we see it.

What NOT to do: throw them out. Throwing away your non-vegan shoes is a waste of an animal’s life, resources, and perfectly good shoes.

Instead, try one of these approaches:

  1. Continue wearing your old shoes until they’re fully exhausted. Then commit to purchasing fully vegan shoes going forward.
  2. Donate or sell them to a secondhand shop or homeless shelter where they may prevent someone from buying new leather shoes.
  3. Pass them on to a friend who you know will get use out of them.

Still not sure how to handle the leather shoes you purchased before you went vegan? Tune in to our Vegan Clothing & Fashion episode of the Plant-Powered People Podcast.

Vegan Shoe Businesses that Closed

Sadly, some fantastic vegan shoe shops and brands have closed, and we’d like to recognize some of them here. If you own shoes from these brands, you have a little piece of vegan shoe history in your possession!

  • Beyond Skin (after operating for 20 years, this high-end vegan shoe brand that made beautiful vegan high heels, flats, and even vegan wedding shoes, closed in 2022 due to difficult times during the pandemic)
  • Herbivore Clothing Company in Portland, Oregon

Keeping your toes cozy, warm, and protected is a high priority. How will you perform your daily duties and have fun frolicking with cold, chapped, or cramped feet? It’s impossible. Finding the perfect pair of vegan slippers is surely the answer.

Whether your style of slippers come in the form of booties, ballets, slides, or clogs, they should be comfortable and cruelty-free. In this guide, you’ll discover a whole new world of animal-free foot coverings and where to find the best brands.

If you’re ready to put your plant-based foot forward, let’s go slipper shopping!

What Are Vegan Slippers?

Vegan slippers are a type of footwear made without any animal products or byproducts. They are an ethical and sustainable alternative to traditional slippers. There’s no reason to have any part of an animal under or around our feet.

There are many fun, practical, and snug styles of vegan slippers available, from cozy and fluffy indoor slippers to more durable outdoor options. A few brands offer eco-friendly options using sustainable and biodegradable materials, like cotton rope, hemp, or natural rubber.

Materials Used in Cruelty-Free Slippers

Vegan-friendly slippers can be made of either synthetic and natural materials in their construction (or both!), such as: organic cotton, recycled rubber, and microfiber, among others. These materials are known for their durability, comfort, and ability to mimic the look and feel of animal-based materials without causing harm to animals. We’re so lucky to have other options!

Why Choose Vegan Slippers?

That’s a good question! There are several reasons why vegan slippers are a smarter choice. Here is a short list to start out with:

  • Ethical: Not wanting to support using animal products in any way.
  • Hypoallergenic: A great option for anyone allergic to animal hair or fur (such as wool).
  • Synthetic: Many synthetic materials feel soft and silky to the skin and are preferable to rougher textures.
  • Less Expensive: The leather and fur industry are labor-intensive (as well as inherently cruel), so the finished materials are much higher in cost. Natural and man-made materials are much less expensive to produce.
  • Durability: Many manufactured materials have more staying power because they are created to be more resistant to heat, liquids, and scrapes.

If you take a peek in the shoe department, there are more and more brands choosing to offer leather and fur-free options. Overall, vegan slippers provide a comfortable and ethical option for those looking to make more sustainable choices in their daily lives.

Are Ugg Slippers Vegan-Friendly?

Classic UGG boots and slippers are still not vegan. Fortunately, there are more and more slip-on, Ugg-style boot brands coming out on the market every day that are not only adorable but vegan-friendly, too! Make sure to peruse our Vegan Uggs Guide for durable, weather-resistant, plush, and wonderfully warm options.

There’s no need to purchase slippers constructed from animal skins and furs when you can easily choose fabulously fun styles that are completely cruelty-free. Materials such as natural rubber, canvas, cotton, hemp, cork, recycled water bottles, and microfiber are not only soft and sensibly practical, but also much better for the planet.

The path to eating more consciously almost always leads to living more consciously in general. And part of that is aligning all the stuff we buy—clothing and accessories, makeup and body care products, cleaning products, etc.—with our values. Today we’re taking you on a vegan handbag adventure to help you find a compassionate and ethical vegan purse, satchel, briefcase, backpack, duffel, clutch, or any kind of bag you need to carry your belongings.

Benefits of Owning a Vegan Handbag

Owning a vegan handbag has many benefits beyond just being cruelty-free! Many vegan bags are made from sustainable materials which means they have less of an environmental impact than traditional leather bags.

Additionally, many vegan bags are stylish yet affordable so you don’t have to break the bank in order to look good! Owning a vegan bag is an easy way to show your commitment to animal rights without having to sacrifice style or quality.

How to Shop for Vegan Purses & Bags

Ready to give your leather handbag a cruelty-free upgrade? You have a few options.

  1. Shop from vegan brands. Yes, these do tend to be a bit more expensive, but it is a great way to vote with your money and support the kind of companies you want to exist in the world.
  2. Look for “accidentally vegan” synthetic handbags at mainstream stores like Target or Walmart.
  3. Buy secondhand. This is the most eco-conscious option of all, and a great way to save money! You can find secondhand shops both online (like ThredUp, Poshmark, and Tradesy) and in person at your neighborhood thrift stores or local Goodwill.

How Can I Find An “Accidentally Vegan” Handbag?

Finding your perfect vegan purse can be easier than ever. When you browse for “accidentally vegan” handbags, you’ll find the most luck at big stores that carry lower-cost items (since non-leather bags are generally much more affordable than leather). Look for these labels:

Also make sure the bag doesn’t have a leather symbol.

Tips For Finding Affordable Vegan Handbags

Finding affordable vegan handbags is easier than you may think! With a little bit of creativity and some savvy shopping, you can find the perfect vegan handbag without breaking the bank.

  • Shop around for deals. It might seem obvious, but make sure to shop around. Look for sales and discounts at stores that specialize in vegan products. Many vegan brands offer discounts throughout the year so keep an eye out! Sometimes brands will send out special discounts just for their email subscribers so if you have an eye for a particular brand, make sure you’re on their list! Also, check out online retailers like Etsy and eBay for great deals on vegan handbags. Who knows? You might even find a designer bag at a fraction of the cost!
  • Consider buying second-hand or vintage bags. Many thrift stores and consignment shops have a wide selection of gently used bags that are much more affordable than buying new. You can also find great deals on vintage bags online or at flea markets and garage sales. Plus, it’s always fun to hunt for hidden gems!
  • Seek out synthetic. Look for bags made from synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester which are often much more affordable than animal-based materials. They’re not only a great option if you’re looking for an affordable vegan handbag, but they also come in all sorts of fun colors and patterns!
  • Get creative with your search! Try searching for “vegan handbags” on sites like Pinterest or Instagram to get some inspiration for unique styles that may not be available in mainstream stores. You may even find some DIY tutorials that will help you create your own custom bag. You might just end up with a one-of-a-kind masterpiece!
  • Support small businesses. If you don’t have the skills to make your own but still want something truly unique, consider supporting a small business and buying a handmade vegan bag. You can find these on Etsy or at local craft fairs and vegan festivals.

How To Care For Vegan Handbags

Caring for your vegan handbag is a breeze! To keep it looking its best, store your vegan handbag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading or discoloration. Avoid getting it wet—instead, use a damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or dust. No need for harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the material.

For vegan leather bags, you can simply use a leather conditioner to keep it looking its finest for years to come! For canvas vegan handbags, spot-clean any stains with a damp cloth and mild soap. To do this, mix a small amount of soap with warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the soapy water and gently dab at the stain, completely saturating it. Then use a dry cloth to lift the stain up—no scrubbing necessary! Allow your vegan handbag to air dry before using it again and you’ll be ready to rock your stylish accessory!

What Should I Do With My Old Leather Bags?

Great question! First, note that there is not one single “right” answer to this question—if and how you get rid of your leather goods is up to you. Here are a few options:

  1. Use your non-vegan items until they’re totally worn out, and commit to buying vegan items going forward.
  2. Donate your leather items to a homeless shelter where they can be given at no-cost to someone who can’t afford to buy these items.
  3. Give or sell them to a secondhand shop (there are even online thrift store like ThredUp) so that someone else can use them until they’re worn out (which may prevent them from buying new leather).
  4. Pass them on to a friend who you know will get use out of them.

We don’t recommend throwing your non-vegan items away. The damage is already done, the animal was already killed, and resources went into producing this product. To discard it is wasteful. Consider this excerpt from our Vegan Belts Guide:

While it may not “feel good” to wear or use items that aren’t aligned with your ethics, the reality is we can’t go back in time and un-buy items we’ve purchased. If you just throw them away, that animal died in vain. There are people in need who can’t afford clothing, and to throw away something that’s in usable condition is needlessly wasteful. Accept the imperfection of the situation and just commit to making more conscious buying choices going forward!

If you’re still unsure about how you would like to handle the animal products you purchased before you went vegan, listen to our Vegan Clothing & Fashion episode of the Plant-Powered People Podcast.
