Let’s talk for a moment about vegan protein powder. Anyone who’s been vegan for a decade, a year, or a minute has undoubtedly faced the question, “But where do you get your protein?!” Protein is a fundamental macro-nutrient essential for building healthy muscles, bones, skin, hair, and more, critical to any balanced diet.

The common assumption is that removing meat from the picture also means cutting protein, much to the concern of bystanders everywhere. It’s time we put those fears to rest and finally get to the heart of plant-based protein facts.

Illustration of a mouse talking to an elephant and asking "Excuse me Ellie...Where do you get your protein?"

How Much Protein Do You Really Need?

Approximately 20 percent of the human body is composed of protein, which is derived from the Greek word meaning “of utmost importance.” Protein exists in every cell of the body and is necessary for both growth and healing.

That said, the amount of protein required for daily consumption is largely overstated. Most people require only 50 to 60 grams of protein each day, aside from athletes, under special medical guidance, or over 60 years old. Everyone’s specific requirements do vary, so it’s a good idea to consult a doctor or nutritionist if you want extra reassurance that you’re feeding your body exactly what it needs to thrive.

What Are Vegan Protein Powders?

For highly active people, growing kids, and anyone that just wants a healthy snack or quick meal replacement, vegan protein powders and protein bars are a great way to fill the gaps. As the demand for vegan options has grown, so has the market for alternative protein powders. It can be overwhelming to consider the myriad choices, especially since so many components listed on the label can sound completely foreign.

Unless you’re buying pure, unflavored protein, be aware that artificial sweeteners and flavors are often added in an effort to keep calorie counts low. Shop carefully if you have specific sensitivities, allergies, or other restrictions.

Types of Protein Powder

Aside from the protein powder blends, there’s also protein powders available with one main type of protein source. These are helpful if you have any allergen concerns or if you prefer one flavor protein over another.

Let’s break down the main plant-based protein powder sources to help find the perfect match for you:

Soy Protein

Soy is the OG of powdered supplements. It’s a complete protein, meaning it contains all 9 essential amino acids necessary for a balanced diet. Recent studies have also linked soy with improved heart health, balancing blood sugar, and reduced cholesterol.

Soy is abundant and thus accessible and affordable, so it’s a great option for anyone on a budget. On the downside, some people may be sensitive to soy, and certain brands might have a more distinctly bean-y taste.

Some of our favorite brands include:

  • Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Soy Protein Powder
  • NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate Powder
  • Naturade Total Soy Protein Powder and Meal Replacement Shakes
Scoop of soy protein powder.

Pea Protein

In addition to being an excellent source of high-quality protein, dried yellow peas are also remarkably high in iron. It’s more easily digested than soy and free of all common allergens.

Additionally, it comes with a solid dose of fiber to keep you full and satisfied longer than just pure isolated protein. This is quickly becoming the most popular plant-based protein option for supplements, whether it’s featured solo or in blends (see below.)

Best bets for current brands include:

  • Naked Nutrition Naked Pea
  • Growing Naturals Pea Protein
  • Sprout Living Simple Pea Protein

Rice Protein

Most people think of rice as being only a starchy side, but that’s selling the humble whole grain short. It’s typically made from brown rice that’s been processed to separate and remove all or most of the carbohydrates.

Rice protein is especially good for those with sensitive stomachs or numerous food allergies, since it’s well tolerated by most. There’s a higher chance that the texture might be a bit gritty compared to other protein sources, but your mileage may vary, especially if it’s further blended into smoothies and bowls.

A few great brands to add to your cart are:

  • Terrasoul Superfoods Organic Sprouted Brown Rice Protein Powder
  • Growing Naturals Premium Rice Protein Powder
  • BulkSupplements Rice Protein Concentrate Powder

Hemp Protein

From clothing to insulation, biofuel to paper, is there anything that hemp can’t do? Add “high in protein and ideal for powdered supplements” to the list of positive attributes, along with an abundance of antioxidants, minerals, fiber, and heart-healthy unsaturated fats.

It comes from the same plant as cannabis but no, it can’t get you high, as it has zero THC content. It can, however, make you fit and full when mixed into shakes and snacks! Some options do have a stronger, grassier flavor and may not be ideal for someone craving a milkshake-like dessert.

For best results try:

  • Nutiva Hemp Seed Protein Powder
  • Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Yeah! Organic Max Fiber
  • Just Hemp Foods Hemp Protein & Fiber Powder for best results.
Hemp protein powder in a wooden bowl.

Plant-Based Whey Protein

Conventional whey is made from isolated dairy protein and thus firmly off the table for vegans. However, the latest innovations in food technology have created DNA-identical whey protein bearing all the same nutrients, minus the cow.

Dairy is still listed as an allergen on the ingredient label, but this is completely vegan dairy. It makes the plant-based switch effortless for anyone that already likes the easily blended and smooth texture of whey and doesn’t want to make any sacrifices for taste.

These options are still scant but growing, including:

  • Myprotein WHEY FWRD
  • California Performance Co V-Whey

Why You Must Make These Delicious Quinoa Bites

Quinoa nuggets are fantastic—crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and a breeze to whip up. Packed with the goodness of quinoa, they’re a flavorful and nutritious twist to your snacking routine. Not quite convinced? Here are even more reasons why these tasty quinoa snacks are so awesome:

  • A healthier alternative to chicken nuggets: If you loved chicken nuggets as a kid, these are an excellent better-for-you substitute. Crispy, flavorful, and all-around appealing in flavor and texture.
  • Simple and Wholesome Ingredients: No fancy ingredients here! Just a staple whole grain, herbs, and spices. You probably already have them in your pantry.
  • Incredibly Satisfying: Just a few of these plant-based protein nuggets are more than enough to make you feel nourished and satisfied. Pair them with your favorite dipping sauce or sliced veggies and you’ve got yourself a well-balanced mini-meal.
  • Perfect for Meal Prep: Put together a batch on the weekend and have a quick and crispy side ready for basically any meal. Choose from pan frying, air-frying, or even baking in the oven. They’re really versatile!
  • Family Friendly Treat: This recipe totally makes you feel like you’re indulging in fast food, but you’re not. The nuggets are way more nutritious than any take out treats and they’re perfect for little hands!

Key Ingredients

Because this recipe has such few ingredients, each one of them has an important part to play. For maximum enjoyment, devour the finished nuggets right away while warm and toasty. If you have to wait, you can always pop them in the oven or air-fryer to crisp back up.

Gathered ingredients for quinoa nuggets with text labels.

Quinoa: Can you believe that you can choose from red, black, white, or tri-color/rainbow quinoa? White is the least bitter, red has the chewiest texture, and black has the most nutrition, but they all taste delicious. The most important thing to remember is to rinse your quinoa well before cooking. You’ll want to release as much of the saponins (the shell that protects them from pests and type of fungus) as you can for a less bitter aftertaste.

Quinoa in a saucepan.

Onion: Chopped onion adds such a great flavor to the quinoa. Scallions, red onion, shallots, or leeks would work well, too.

Chives: If the flavor of chives is not your favorite, how about using garlic or parsley instead? Remember to chop finely for best results.

Flour: All-purpose flour helps to give a crispy and crunchy texture to the nuggets. If you’ve run out of flour or are sensitive to gluten, feel free to use cornstarch instead. Use a quarter cup of cornstarch in place of the half cup of flour. If you’d rather use gluten-free flour, choose a type that is 1-to-1 and use the same amount.

Lemon Juice: This ingredient adds not only moisture to the mixture but also a little acidic zing. An unflavored vinegar can also be used (or even lime juice) in a pinch.

How To Make Quinoa Nuggets

Cooking up a batch of vegan quinoa nuggets is simple and fun to do. As soon as you roll up the balls, you’re more than halfway there! They’re a great snack or mini-meal to prep ahead of time. When you’re ready to enjoy, all you need to do is fry them up! Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Mix together the quinoa, onion, chives, flour, salt, and red chili pepper flakes. Moisten with the water and lemon juice.

The mixed up quinoa nuggets batter in a mixing bowl with a spoon.

Step 2: Make 1-inch balls out of the quinoa mixture, squeezing firmly so that the balls form a dough. Put the finished balls into the freezer for 5 minutes. (You can also chill them in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.)

Finally, Step 3: Cook the nuggets a few at a time in an oil-coated pan over medium-high heat. Free free to press on each one to flatten them a little. It helps to oil the spatula to prevent sticking. Fry the nuggets for 5 minutes until the bottom of each nugget is golden and then flip. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 5 minutes more.

How To Make the Best Quinoa

Quinoa in a saucepan.

Not sure how to make quinoa? Here’s an easy recipe to follow that’s pretty much foolproof:

Rinse ⅔ cup of dry quinoa in cold water using a fine-mesh strainer. Add the quinoa and 1⅓ cups of water to a medium pot with a lid. Bring to a boil, uncovered, over high heat. Cover with the lid and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 20 minutes.

Allow to cool completely before using in this quinoa recipe.

Serving Tips and Suggestions

These yummy quinoa bites are so much fun to eat! Sure, you can simply eat them plain right off a plate, but that’s pretty boring. Here are a few tasty and tempting ideas for bumping up your bites a notch!

  • Dive into Dips & Dressings: Ketchup is always a popular choice, but how about some thousand island, dill, vegan aioli, french, or barbecue instead? You can never go wrong with a bit of sriracha or creamy hummus on the side!
  • Serve as a Savory Side: These crispy little protein tots pair well with a vegan burger, fresh salad, or a bowl of crudités (such as broccoli, bell pepper, baby carrots, cucumber, and celery). Drizzle with vegan mayo, lime juice, or hot sauce for even more fabulous flavor.
  • Creative Cooking Methods: If you’d like to go easy on the oil or fried foods, how about using the oven or air-fryer instead? For oven baking, place the nuggets on a greased nonstick baking pan and bake at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes, flipping them halfway. Be sure to flatten them before baking. If you wish to use an air-fryer instead, preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F (about 5 minutes). While the fryer is heating, coat the nuggets in panko bread crumbs. Lightly spray the nuggets and the fryer basket with vegetable oil spray and cook for 10 minutes.

Recipe Q+A

Can I use pre-made quinoa out of a package instead of cooking mine at home?

Definitely! If the quinoa is frozen and needs to be heated up first, just remember to let it cool before trying to form the balls. They’ll stay together much easier if the ingredients are chilled.

How do I store any leftover quinoa bites?

Simply place any remaining quinoa nuggets into a sealed container and store in the fridge for around 3-5 days. You can also add them to a freezer-safe bag or container for at least 3 months and up to 5-6 months in the freezer. To reheat, you can air-fry them for a few minutes or bake them in the oven for about 8 minutes at 400 degrees F.

How do you keep quinoa from getting mushy?

Make sure to drain any excess liquid after cooking and let it sit for at least a few minutes before serving. If you have a fine-mesh sieve, add the finished cooked quinoa and press down on it gently to remove extra moisture.

How can I make these gluten-free?

There’s no problem making these tasty little nuggets gluten-free. All you need to do is substitute gluten-free, all-purpose flour for the regular flour in the recipe. If you use a 1-to-1 version, such as King Arthur or Bob’s Red Mill, it should be a super easy swap.

This fun and flavorful recipe is inspired by a recipe in The Friendly Vegan Cookbook. If you haven’t already added this cookbook to your vegan cookbook collection, it’s a must!

What’s Thanksgiving without the Turkey? Take it from someone who has been celebrating a meat-free Thanksgiving for more than 25 years—you can have all the best parts of Thanksgiving without the turkey. Trust me. But you don’t have to give up that savory centerpiece in order to celebrate a compassionate holiday. There is another option.

You can choose kindness and turkey by swapping the bird for a Tofurky! Or a Field Roast, or a Gardein roast, or a homemade seitan roast, or any of the many vegan turkey roasts out there today.

Today we’re going to show you how to prepare a Tofurky roast—but note that this method also works beautifully with Field Roast (my personal favorite vegan Thanksgiving roast).

Preparing a vegan turkey roast is a whole lot easier than prepping a bird. Most vegan Thanksgiving roasts come pre-stuffed with delicious plant-based stuffing, so all you need to do is smother your roast with a baste, surround it with veggies, wrap it all up in tin foil in a casserole dish, and bake it to perfection!

Vegan Tofurky Roast Recipe Ingredients

The Best Tofurky Baste

If you look on the back of the Tofurky box, you’ll see a recipe for a simple base made with 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and herbs. You can certainly use that vegan turkey baste recipe, but you’ll see the garlic rosemary baste I use in the recipe below.

Here’s what you need for the best Tofurky baste:

  • Olive oil
  • Minced garlic
  • Fresh rosemary
  • Salt

That’s it! This makes enough to coat the vegetables and the vegan turkey roast to create a really beautiful rosemary and garlic infused meal.

Pick Your Veggies

Baking your Tofurky surrounded by roughly chopped vegetables is a great way to create an instant healthy side-dish to enjoy with your turkey. Even outside of Thanksgiving, my husband and I made this meal regularly for dinner to enjoy with some gravy. The veggies I always include are the classics:

  • Potatoes (I use 3-4 Yukon Gold potatoes but any potato will work)
  • Carrots (I use at least 2 large carrots)
  • Onion (I use either one small yellow onion or a red onion, and I like it sliced into strips but you can also chop it into big chunks.
Gathered ingredients for preparing a Tofurky roast, shown in various measuring bowls and spoons.

You can use any vegetables you’d like, keeping in mind that they’ll be roasting for about an hour and half at 350 degrees F. Sweet potatoes are delicious, as are any root vegetable (like beets or parsnips), and halved Brussels sprouts work great as well. Use what you have!

Should I Peel the Potatoes and Carrots?

Great question! It’s up to you. You certainly can, but I choose not to peel mine for a few reasons:

  • Convenience (saves time and effort)
  • Extra nutrition (vegetables like potatoes often have even more nutrients in the skin)
  • Preventing food waste (no need to discard edible parts)
  • I like the rustic feel

How to Cook a Tofurky Roast

  1. Before starting, thaw your Tofurky roast in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a casserole dish with large pieces of tin foil, ensuring enough foil to reach up the sides and connect with the top piece to be added later.
  3. Unwrap the Tofurky and place it in the foil-lined dish. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, minced garlic, chopped rosemary, and salt, mixing thoroughly.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, coat chopped carrots, sliced onions, and potatoes with two tablespoons of the oil mixture, then arrange them around the Tofurky in the casserole dish.
  5. Spread 1 heaping tablespoon of the oil mixture on top of the Tofurky using a spoon or basting brush. Cover with tin foil, sealing the top and bottom foil to enclose the Tofurky and veggies. Bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes.
  6. Remove from the oven, uncover, add the remaining oil mixture on top of the roast, and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  7. Take out of the oven, remove the foil, garnish with rosemary sprigs, and savor the deliciousness!
How to Make Tofurky

How to Slice Tofurky

There is a great divide among vegans regarding how they like their Tofurky sliced. Some like it thick—a big hunk of vegan turkey taking up nice real estate on the plate that requires a knife to saw into. Others like it thinly sliced—almost shaved—which is actually the method Tofurky (the brand) recommends.

Over my 13+ years of celebrating vegan Thanksgivings, I’ve always seen roasts cut into thick slices because they’re easier to serve to a crowd that way (the stuffing won’t fall out), but I’m eager to try the thin slice with my next roast. Do you have a preference? Let us know in the comments!

Either way you cut it, you’ll want to use a very sharp knife (choosing a serrated knife helps). Some people even use an electric knife which is especially helpful if you want thinly shaved slices.

Tip: time your cooking so that you pull the Tofurky out of the oven right before you sit down to eat! It’s a million times better hot out of the oven. Also keep in mind sliced Tofurky dries out quickly so don’t cut it until you’re ready to eat, and keep your roast covered until then as well.

What To Serve With Tofurky Roast

A delicious vegan gravy is key to making a winning roast. We have a simple mushroom-free vegan gravy recipe that goes perfectly atop your roast, your mashed potatoes, and all the other delightful Thanksgiving sides you serve up on your plate. We also have an insanely good mushroom gravy recipe in The Friendly Vegan Cookbook.

Where Can I Buy Tofurky or Field Roast?

One of the hardest parts of bringing this meal to life is finding your vegan holiday. Tofurky and Field Roast are seasonal items, meaning many stores don’t start selling them until November, and stores commonly sell out before Thanksgiving.

My suggestion is: buy your roast as soon as you see it! They freeze beautifully, so if you know you’ll be making a vegetarian roast for Thanksgiving and you spot one while you’re out shopping, toss it in your cart. Don’t wait, because there’s no guarantee you’ll find it again. Or you may have to drive around to a number of grocery stores to track it down, which is never a welcome scavenger hunt when life is already busy.

I got this Tofurky at Sprouts, but in years past I’ve gotten them at Whole Foods, my local natural foods store, and Safeway. If you need to find one fast, call the stores you’ll be visiting first to make sure they have them.

If you’re on the hunt for a Tofurky Roast, here are some nationwide grocery chains that typically stock it:

  • Walmart
  • Target
  • Kroger
  • Safeway
  • Whole Foods Market
  • Sprouts Farmers Market
  • Natural Grocers

Which Vegan Roast Should I Choose?

This is a point of contention for many vegetarians, since the vegan roast options on the market today are all vastly different. So we got the four most popular roasts available in the United States and put them to the test in our Vegan Turkey Face-Off video.

Three of us tried the roasts and the winner was…

There was no winner! We all had different favorite picks. Some people hate Tofurky but love Field Roast. Some love Gardein but can’t stand the others. My personal favorite is Field Roast, but that doesn’t mean it will be yours. It may take you a few years of exploring a different roast each year to find your personal favorite (and the one that will win over your family and friends).

Make It For Any Holiday

While a Tofurky or Field Roast is the obvious choice for Thanksgiving, don’t forget about the other holidays! You can get extra roasts and keep them in your freezer so you have a festive “special” roast for holidays like:

Ingredients

  • 1 Tofurky Roast
  • 3-4 Yukon Gold potatoes chopped into large bite-sized chunks
  • 2 large carrots chopped into large bite-sized chunks
  • 1 small yellow onion sliced or chopped
  • 5 large garlic cloves roughly minced
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped rosemary plus three sprigs for garnish
  • ¼ teaspoon  salt

Instructions

  • Thaw your frozen Tofurky roast in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Line a casserole dish with large pieces of tin foil, leaving enough foil to reach up the sides and connect with the top piece of foil that will be added on later.
  • Remove plastic wrap from Tofurky and place the roast inside the foil lined dish.
  • In a small bowl, add the olive oil, minced garlic, chopped rosemary, and salt and mix well.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add the chopped carrots, sliced onion, and chopped potatoes, and two tablespoons of the oil mixture. Mix until evenly coated and then place the veggies into the foil-lined casserole dish surrounding the Tofurky.
  • Using a spoon or a basting brush, spread 1 heaping tablespoon of the oil mixture atop the Tofurky roast.
  • Cover with tin foil and seal the top and bottom foil together so the Tofurky and veggies are completely enclosed. Bake in the oven for 1 hour and 20 minutes.
  • Remove from oven, uncover, add remaining oil mixture on top of the roast, and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven, remove the foil wrap, garnish with sprigs of rosemary, and enjoy!

Notes

Sliced Tofurky can dry out quickly, so only slice what you’re planning to eat right away, and tightly wrap the rest.
To store, wrap in foil and store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. To reheat in a microwave, cover with gravy or moisten with water and cover with a moist paper towel.

Whatever your motivation, the quest for a delectable substitute to grace your holiday table begins here. Others may opt for simplicity, replacing the bird with a store-bought vegan turkey roast. The choice is yours, and it’s a delightful adventure waiting to unfold.

Whether you embark on a culinary journey to create a veggie-centric masterpiece or prefer the convenience of a store-bought vegan turkey, you’ll find a wealth of options to suit your tastes. In this comprehensive vegan turkey guide, we’ll introduce you to the most popular brands offering pre-made turkey alternatives.

So, let’s dive into the world of vegan turkey and discover a bounty of choices that will make your Thanksgiving celebration a feast to remember!

An entire freezer case with several brands of plant-based vegan turkey options at Whole Foods grocery store.

Field Roast Classic Celebration Roast

The Celebration Roast by Field Roast is one of the most prevalent—and most delicious—vegan turkey options on the market. It’s really versatile, and you don’t need to defrost, baste, or even bake it (although you certainly can). Unlike the other roasts, this is available year-round and sold as both a full-roast and a half-roast (perfect for slicing and putting on sandwiches).

A box of Field Roast's Celebration Roast at Whole Foods Market in front of a shelf of vegan turkey options.

This is a popular choice among people who don’t want to be eating an “exact replica” of a turkey, and appreciate seeing lentils and herbs indicative of a roast made from whole plant foods. This roast also tends to be more popular among omnivores, because it doesn’t try to be turkey.

Field Roast Hazelnut Cranberry En Croute

If you really want to wow your guests, pick up one of Field Roast’s Hazelnut Cranberry En Croute roasts. These special roasts are wrapped in phyllo dough and include some festive flavors of Thanksgiving.

This can be a little harder to find, so if you see one in early November, pick it up! It’s often sold at grocery stores like Sprouts, Whole Foods Market, and Natural Foods stores, among others. It’s well worth the hunt!

Tofurky Roast

This is the classic vegan turkey roast—the “OG” if you will—that has paved the way for all the others. Tofurky has been serving up Tofurky roasts for more than 20 years, since 1995.

The wild rice stuffing is delicious, and the Tofurky “meat” most closely imitates like turkey. Plus, the Tofurky roast is the most protein-packed of them all, ringing in at 37 grams of protein per serving.

These roasts transform into really beautiful centerpieces when you prepare them with potatoes, carrots, herbs, and a special olive oil and garlic marinade. Here’s how to make a perfect Tofurky.

Tofurky also sells frozen tubs of vegan gravy that you can simply heat and serve, if you don’t want to make your own.

Gardein Holiday Roast

Gardein is the meatiest of them all, with that convincing “pulled meat” texture, if you’re into that. Gardein products are also very accessible—carried by Big Box stores like Target and beyond.

They’ve also stepped up their game with their delicious breaded coating and colorful cranberry-infused stuffing. Plus, this holiday roast comes with two packs of vegan gravy which is one more item you can cross off your list!

365 Whole Foods Market Plant-Based Turkey Roasts

Many store brands offer their own plant-based roasts. For example, the Whole Foods Market brand 365 has meatless plant-based roasts filled with a portobello mushroom stuffing that come packaged with gravy.

Watch Out for Vegetarian Roasts That Aren’t Vegan!

As you navigate the world of holiday roasts and vegan turkey alternatives, it’s crucial to exercise a discerning eye and read product labels carefully. While many vegetarian roasts may seem like suitable vegan options at first glance, not all of them are entirely plant-based.

Here are some key considerations to keep in mind and animal ingredients to look out for.

  • Dairy Ingredients: Some vegetarian roasts may contain dairy-derived ingredients like cheese, butter, or milk powder. These ingredients can make a product vegetarian but not vegan. Be sure to check the ingredient list for any dairy-related terms.
  • Eggs: Eggs are another common non-vegan ingredient found in some vegetarian roasts. Look out for terms like “egg whites” or “egg albumen” in the ingredient list.
  • Honey: Some products may use honey as a sweetener or glaze, which is not considered vegan. Check for honey in the ingredient list and opt for products without it if you follow a strict vegan diet.
  • Gelatin: Gelatin, derived from animal collagen, is sometimes used as a gelling agent in processed foods. Ensure that the roast you choose is free of gelatin.
  • Certifications: Look for vegan certifications from recognized organizations like the Vegan Society, Vegan Action, or the Certified Vegan logo. These certifications provide added assurance that the product is genuinely vegan.

While some vegetarian roasts may appear suitable for a vegan Thanksgiving, it’s crucial to be vigilant and thoroughly inspect product labels to ensure they align with your dietary preferences. By paying attention to ingredients and certifications, you can confidently select vegan-friendly options that will make your holiday meal a compassionate and satisfying experience.

Best Vegan Turkey Taste Test

With a variety of vegan turkey options available, you might be wondering, which one is the absolute best? The answer, as it turns out, is subjective and can vary from person to person. In fact, during a comprehensive taste-test with three longtime vegan judges, each had different favorites.

Embark on your own taste-test adventure by trying out different vegan turkey roasts available in the market. This not only allows you to discover your family’s personal favorite but also contributes to preventing needless suffering for turkeys like the one you see here. By opting for a compassionate and delicious alternative, you can make a positive impact on both your holiday feast and animal welfare.

Homemade Vegan Turkey Recipe

While buying a vegan turkey at the store is certainly the easier option, if you’re determined to be the hostess of the year, you may enjoy making your own! This vegan seitan turkey recipe shows you how to do just that, using ingredients like chickpeas, vegetable broth, spices, and the “meat” that holds it all together: vital wheat gluten.

How to Cook and Prepare a Store-Bought Roast

Preparing a store-bought vegan roast is a straightforward process, and the instructions may vary slightly depending on the brand and type of roast you choose. Here’s a general guide to help you get started.

Ingredients and Tools You’ll Need:

  • Store-bought vegan roast
  • Roasting pan or baking dish
  • Cooking oil or non-stick spray
  • Aluminum foil
  • Basting sauce or marinade (optional)

1. Preheat Your Oven: Start by preheating your oven to the temperature specified on the packaging of your vegan roast. This is typically around 350°F to 400°F (175°C to 200°C).

2. Prepare Your Roasting Pan: Grease your roasting pan or baking dish with a small amount of cooking oil or non-stick spray to prevent sticking.

3. Remove Packaging: Take the vegan roast out of its packaging. If it’s frozen, make sure to thaw it in advance according to the instructions provided on the package.

4. Season (Optional): If desired, you can season the vegan roast with your favorite herbs, spices, or a basting sauce. This step is optional, as many store-bought vegan roasts come pre-seasoned.

5. Place in the Pan: Carefully place the vegan roast in the prepared roasting pan or baking dish. Make sure it fits comfortably with some space around it for even cooking.

6. Cover with Foil (Optional): You can cover the roast with aluminum foil if you want to retain moisture and prevent the top from getting too crispy. This is especially useful if your roast tends to dry out easily. Simply tent the foil over the roast, leaving some space for air circulation.

7. Roast in the Oven: Put the roasting pan with the vegan roast into the preheated oven. Be sure to follow the cooking time and temperature instructions on the packaging. Generally, vegan roasts cook for about 15-20 minutes per pound (450g) at the recommended temperature.

8. Baste (Optional): If you’re using a basting sauce or marinade, you can periodically baste the roast during cooking. This adds flavor and helps keep it moist.

9. Use a Thermometer (Recommended): For precise cooking, use an oven thermometer to ensure the internal temperature of the vegan roast reaches the recommended level, which is typically around 165°F (74°C). This helps ensure it’s thoroughly cooked.

10. Rest and Serve: Once the roast reaches the desired internal temperature, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a juicier roast.

Then, slice and serve as the centerpiece of your holiday meal. Remember that specific cooking instructions may vary between brands and types of vegan roasts, so it’s essential to read and follow the guidance provided on the packaging for the best results. Enjoy your cruelty-free and delicious holiday feast!

Cook Your Roast With Vegetables and Aromatics

Elevate your vegan roast by placing a bed of fresh vegetables and aromatics, such as onions, carrots, celery, and garlic, around the roast in the roasting pan. These ingredients can infuse the roast with additional flavors and create a tasty side dish.

Tofurky roast in a baking dish on top of roasted vegetables.

You can season the vegetables with a sprinkle of salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs to complement the flavors of the roast. As the roast cooks, the juices from the roast will mingle with the vegetables, creating a delicious medley. Be sure to stir or toss the vegetables occasionally to evenly distribute the flavors and prevent them from sticking to the pan.

Once everything is cooked to perfection, serve the roasted vegetables alongside your vegan roast as a flavorful and nutritious accompaniment to your holiday meal. This step not only enhances the overall taste of your holiday feast but also adds vibrant colors and textures to your plate, making for a visually appealing and well-rounded dining experience. Enjoy

Serving Suggestions

Once your vegan turkey is ready, it’s time to create a festive holiday meal. Here are some serving suggestions and accompanying vegan Thanksgiving recipes:

  • Gravy: Serve vegan gravy made from vegetable broth and thickened with flour or cornstarch.
  • Stuffing: Pair your vegan turkey with a delicious stuffing made from breadcrumbs, vegetables, and herbs. Many store-bought stuffing brands are “accidentally” vegan, and can simply be prepared with vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
  • Mashed Potatoes: Creamy mashed potatoes make for a classic side dish.
  • Cranberry Sauce: Tangy cranberry sauce complements the flavors of the main course.
  • Roasted Vegetables: Roast a variety of vegetables like carrots, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes for a colorful and nutritious addition to your meal.
  • Vegan Desserts: Finish your holiday feast with vegan desserts like pumpkin pie, apple crisp, or chocolate cake.

Vegan Seafood Guide

“4 million fishing vessels of all sizes now ply the oceans, many with increasing capacity and efficiencies to catch more fish. As pressure from fishing grows, the likelihood of damage to the structure and function of the ocean ecosystem increases. Inadequate government capacity and cooperation to manage, regulate, and control fisheries and fisheries trade, especially in developing nations and on the high seas, are key factors contributing to the current problems in oceanic fisheries.”

Vegan Seafood Brands

If you’re looking for delicious, sustainable, and cruelty-free options that will satisfy your craving for the flavors of the sea, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve done the research for you and have compiled a list of the best vegan seafood brands that offer a wide variety of options.

Good Catch Foods (Vegan Tuna Fish, Crab Cakes, & Fish Burgers)

Created by celebrated vegan chefs Derek Sarno and Chad Sarno, this brand has paved the way for vegan seafood. Realizing that tuna is a huge favorite, they launched their vegan tuna pouches in three different flavors: Naked in Water, Mediterranean, and Oil and Herbs. Good news for us! They have since launched a line of frozen entrees and appetizers which includes: vegan fish burgers, vegan crab cakes, and vegan fish cakes!

Loma Linda (Vegan Tuna)

This beloved brand has a huge range of meat replacement products. From taco fillings to chorizo and canned sausages to an actual can of vegan tuna. Cool, right? Tuno, as they decided to call it, resembles the canned tuna so much you’d have to read the label a few times (although it’s more like tuna chunks). Plus the idea of opening a can of plant-based tuna to prepare your vegan tuna salad is beyond amazing.

Vegan Zeastar (Vegan Salmon, Shrimp, Calamari, Cod, etc.)

This amazing brand is all about unique and revolutionary plant-based seafood, with tastes and textures that perfectly mimic their fishy counterparts. Linda McCartney Foods (Vegan Seafood Products)

This brand goes way back! The founder is none other than Linda McCartney (Paul McCartney’s late wife), and she was a pioneer when it comes to animal rights and the vegan lifestyle. This brand has a huge range of vegetarian and vegan products (from sausages and burgers to meat pies) but they have recently launched three sea-themed products.

Miyoko’s Creamery (Vegan Lox Cream Cheese)

Vegan goddess Miyoko Schinner brought to life the first mainstream vegan lox cream cheese called “Un-Lox Your Dreams.” This schmear is perfect atop bagels, is a beautiful lox-shade of pink, and tastes smoky and, as Miyoko describes, “seafood-y without the fish.

Blue Evolution (Seaweed)

Seaweed is the ultimate vegan seafood. Think of it as a sea vegetable! It’s filled with ocean nutrients and is a good source of iodine, magnesium, and iron, and it’s really versatile in cooking. You can add kelp ribbons to your rice bowls, use it like you would any leafy green, and add a sprinkle of seaweed to chickpeas for an extra ocean-y chickpea tuna. It can also be farmed very sustainably, and even regeneratively! It takes zero fertilizers, fresh water, or soil to grow.

Is Fish Healthy for You?

Many people intentionally include fish in their diet because of perceived health benefits. The usual arguments made in defense of eating fish are based on fish as a source of high-quality protein, iodine, and various vitamins and minerals, including Omega-3.

Some people will point out the relationship between Omega-3 and brain development, or between fatty fish and the reduction in the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

But here’s the happy-catch! Fish is not the only source of Omega-3. It’s also found in chia, walnuts, flax seeds, and more. And your risk of heart attack and stroke can greatly be mitigated by following a wholesome plant-based diet.

There are also many risk factors associated with eating fish

Cholesterol, Mercury, and PCBs in Seafood

The first is cholesterol. Most fish and seafood will contain certain levels of cholesterol. While it seems broadly accepted that eating fish may help you manage your low-density lipoprotein (i.e., “bad” cholesterol) levels, there are certain foods like shrimp that your doctor may advise you to stay away from if trying to manage these levels. In comparison, plant-based foods contain zero cholesterol.

The biggest risk of eating fish, however, is the potentially harmful levels of contamination. Fish can accumulate high levels of toxins like mercury and carcinogens like PCBs which will ultimately lead to high levels of contaminants in your body over time. The more seafood you consume, the more harmful this can be.

While there is no absolute consensus as to how much mercury or PCBs in fish, and ultimately humans, should be considered as dangerous, there is a broad understanding that the accumulation of mercury in the body can be very dangerous. Mercury is a heavy metal that is highly toxic and can impact the nervous system. It can even cause severe neurological symptoms and damage.

What About Fish Oil, DHA, and Omega-3s?

Thanks to decades of marketing campaigns from supplement companies, the idea that we need fatty fish in our diets to achieve optimal health are very deeply imprinted in our brains. But have we ever asked ourselves why?

Well, it turns out that the reason why we are “supposed” to eat fish is because of the specific fats they contain—namely DHA and Omega-3 fatty acids. It’s the good fats we’re after—not the fish itself!

And guess what? We can get these DHA and Omega-3 fatty acids without the need to harm any fish or other sea animals. Instead, we can turn to plant-foods like chia seeds, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and many more. You can also get vegan Omega-3 supplements and vegan DHA supplements packed with DHA made from algae! We have an entire article written by a registered dietitian about vegan DHA and how to make sure you’re getting enough. We’ve also compiled many of the best vegan vitamins to cover all your needs.

Do Fish Feel Pain?

There’s a general misconception that fish cannot feel pain. This is simply not true. The most recent research all points to the fact that fish are capable of suffering just like mammals and birds.

For quite some time it has been understood that fish have nervous systems that comprehend and respond to pain—despite differences in how the brains and nervous systems of fish have evolved over time in comparison with us. Neurobiologists have demonstrated this in a range of experiments. For example, we can see that fish respond to pain when injected with pain-inducing substances. Similarly, it has been shown that fish have neurotransmitters such as endorphins that work—to the best of our scientific knowledge—to provide pain relief.

These findings are further supported by our understanding of pain as an evolutionary adaptation that helps species to survive.

Yes, Fish Feel Pain And Experience Fear

In a similar context, research increasingly indicates that fish are also capable of feeling fear. This is something we may have witnessed in our companion animals when they’re exposed to an earthquake, fireworks, or being chased. In addition to being able to feel fear, research shows that fish also opt to not feel fear if given the choice.

Fish are not only able to feel pain and fear but also go to great lengths to protect their own lives. There’s no doubt that being jabbed with a sharp hook or suffocating is terrifying and painful to fish.

Choosing plant-based foods instead of seafood will prevent suffering and save lives. There’s no better reason than that!

Long Line Fishing Illustration | World of Vegan Art

How Does Eating Seafood Affect The Environment?

Commercial capture fishing, especially when controlled poorly and performed unsustainably (as it so often is), can severely impact the ecosystem. It’s estimated that almost 80% of the world’s fisheries are either fully exploited, over-exploited, depleted, or in a state of collapse.

Worse yet, it’s estimated that 90% of the stocks of large predatory fish, such as sharks, tuna, marlin, and swordfish, have already disappeared. At the current rate, unless we make changes fast, our oceans may be void of fish by as soon as 2048.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYDIVmkFmAg

But the problem goes beyond the shrinking size or existence of a single species or population. The marine and ultimately earth’s ecosystem is heavily intertwined. The stress on (or disappearance of) a single species can eventually impact other species and even an entire ecosystem.

In addition, catching fish is not just catching fish. Depending on fishing techniques—for example, bottom trawling—huge amounts of by-catch may be caught together with the targeted fish. This can range from other fish and seafood to turtles, sharks, dolphins, and more. These animals, classified as “by-catch,” are typically discarded afterward, frequently dying in the process.

So when you decide to give up fish, you not only help to save that particular species. You also help save turtles, dolphins, and many other species dearly loved by all.

Leaving sea animals off of your plate is a powerful way to protect our ocean and all the creatures that call it home. Now let’s explore all the fun seafood-inspired plant-based options we can turn to instead!

  • Deliciously Satisfying: The richness of the green goddess dressing combined with the high fiber of greens, grains, and veggies makes this salad stand out above the rest. Sweet and savory all in one!
  • Gluten-Free and Soy Free: A great option for anyone who is sensitive to gluten or soy. High in protein and healthy grains, without having to worry about digestive issues. A win, win!
  • Fantastic for Food Prep: You can easily make any of the recipe elements ahead of time, especially the quinoa, roasted vegetables, and salad dressing. When you’re ready, all you need to do is mix and serve! Excellent for holiday meals when there is a lot to do ahead of time.

Key Ingredients

While it might seem like this recipe has a lot going on, they’re all super simple to prepare. You can make some of the parts a day or two before. If you’re pressed for time, buy frozen, cooked quinoa and just heat it up when it’s time to make the salad. These star ingredients make this recipe sparkle!

The ingredients for arugula quinoa salad in individual bowls scattered around.

Arugula: Although this little leafy green is a little bitter, it also has the best tart and peppery bite. If you’re not a fan of arugula, you can substitute baby kale, watercress, dandelion greens, frisee, or even baby spinach.

Quinoa: This tasty grain-like seed is a wonderful edition to this salad. It’s light, fluffy, and flavorful. Even a half cup gives you an additional 4 grams of protein for the day.

Cooked quinoa in a bowl.

Butternut Squash: Any squash will work in this salad, but butternut squash is particularly yummy. It is most similar in flavor and texture to a sweet potato. If you can’t get your hands on a butternut squash, try using a delicata or acorn squash. A sugar pumpkin would also work well.

A bowl of chopped, roasted butternut squash.

Brussels Sprouts: A love-it-or-hate-it veggie for sure. We love using these rounded wonders when roasting, but feel free to substitute for broccoli, cauliflower, or cabbage.

Dried Cranberries: These little ruby jeweled fruit are fabulous in salads! They add a sweet and tart combination that is totally addictive. Cranberries are also a good source of vitamin C. If you don’t have any dried cranberries on hand, you can always use dried currants, tart cherries, or raspberries.

A small bowl of dried cranberries.

Pumpkin Seeds: Savory and nutty, these little nuggets lend an awesome crunchy addition to any salad. If you haven’t already made your own, make sure to try out our Sweet Spiced Roasted Pumpkin Seeds recipe! Other tantalizing nut and seed options include sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, hemp seeds, and pistachios.

How To Store this Vegan Quinoa Salad

The best approach to storing any leftover quinoa arugula salad is to separate the ingredients by type before combining into one large salad. This way, any remaining ingredient can be stored in its own container and stay fresher longer. Also, you’re able to freeze any specific ingredient, if desired.

Store the cooked veggies together, the fresh greens in a separate container, as well as the quinoa and toppings. You may wish to use different toppings in your next salad meal, such as nuts, dried fruit, and/or dressing. Use a small glass mason jar or any jar with a tight lid for any creamy dressing that’s left over.

Any of these recipe ingredients (except the dressing) may be safely frozen for up to 3 months. Even the nuts and dried fruit can be placed in the freezer. Although greens can be frozen from fresh, we do recommend using fresh leafy greens if you are planning to make another salad.

Tasty Tips and Suggestions

Crafting a savory salad is fun, as well as creative. If you’re not a huge butternut squash or brussels sprouts fan, feel free to swap out these ingredients for family favorites. Though, we’re pretty confident that you’ll actually love how these roasted veggies taste in this salad. Here are some favorite swaps and recipe suggestions:

  • Roasted Veggies Rock: Next time around, how about giving Delicata squash, cauliflower, broccoli, or rainbow veggies a try?
  • Next Level Nuts: Pumpkins seeds are pretty perfect, but we also love to use macadamia nuts, pecans, slivered almonds, or candied walnuts in our salads.
  • A Dose of Dried Fruit: Colorful dried cranberries are certainly hard to beat, but how about chopped dates, golden raisins, red currants, or maybe even some freeze-dried berries for extra crunch?
  • Dive into Different Dressings: This Green Goddess dressing is a true favorite, but you may want to consider a creamy dill, tangy french, savory tahini, citrus turmeric, or even the always popular peanut sauce!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use both brussels sprouts and butternut squash in this salad?

Feel free to only use one of these roasted veggies in the salad…or, if you prefer, use an entirely different cooked veggie with the quinoa. This recipe is completely customizable to your taste!

Is it possible to make this quinoa salad with cranberry recipe if the cranberries are fresh instead of dried?

You can use fresh cranberries, but they will be very tart. Dried cranberries are very sweet, so they balance out the savory dressing in this dish. A better option (other than dried) is to use a scoop of homemade cranberry sauce or jarred cranberry sauce instead.

Can I swap out for brown rice in this butternut squash quinoa salad?

Yes! Any cooked grain would work well in this recipe, including steamed rice, buckwheat, millet, amaranth, polenta, or kamut.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup quinoa plus 1 ¾ cups water for cooking
  • 3 cups butternut squash cubed
  • cups Brussels sprouts halved or quartered
  • Olive oil to taste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 5 ounces arugula
  • cup dried cranberries
  • cup pumpkin seeds or any other nuts or seeds

Green Dressing

  • ½ cup cashews soaked for at least 2 hours
  • 1 large lemon
  • 3 medium cloves garlic
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • 1 small bunch parsley
  • ¼ cup dill packed
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • cup water plus more as needed

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Cook quinoa: In a medium saucepan, add 1 cup quinoa and 1 3/4 cups water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, cover the pot, reduce heat to low, and allow to simmer for 15 minutes. Then, without removing the lid, remove from heat and leave for 10 minutes before fluffing the quinoa with a spoon. Set aside to cool.
  • Roast the squash and Brussels sprouts: On a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat, add the butternut squash and Brussels sprouts. Drizzle generously with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Mix until coated and bake for 25-30 minutes at 400 degrees F until Brussels sprouts are slightly crispy and lightly browned. Set aside to cool.
  • Make the dressing: In a high-powered blender, add the cashews, juice of the lemon, garlic cloves, tahini, parsley, dill, olive oil, salt, and ⅓ cup of water, and blend on high until smooth and creamy. If needed, add up to an additional ¼ cup of water to achieve the desired dressing consistency.
  • Assemble the salad: In a large serving bowl, add the arugula, cooked and cooled quinoa, roasted and cooled butternut squash and Brussels sprouts, dried cranberries, and pumpkin seeds (or nuts of choice). Drizzle with dressing to serve; or serve dressing on the side if you’d like to show the salad’s vibrant fall colors for a Thanksgiving table.

Notes

For an oil-free version of this salad dressing, replace ½ cup olive oil with and additional ½ cup soaked cashews, and add additional water and lemon juice as needed to achieve the perfect consistency and flavor.
This salad is fantastic for meal prep and lasts 2-3 days in the refrigerator.
If you store the dressing in the refrigerator, it may thicken, in which case you can simply add more water and stir or shake it up to create a pourable liquid dressing.

Crockpot time is approaching and festive parties are not far away. Instead of feeling flustered when someone asks you to bring party food to share, say “Yes!” with confidence. Are you ready to savor every bite of these delectable, snackable morsels?

Vegan bbq sauce meatballs served on a platter with toothpicks.

Why You’ll Love These Holiday Grape Jelly and BBQ Sauce Meatballs

Why is this recipe so popular every single year? It might be because people absolutely love meatballs, but it’s also due to the fact that this recipe is:

Quick and Easy: What could be simpler than throwing three ingredients into a crockpot? All you need is patience and a healthy appetite.

Only Four Ingredients: In a pinch, you can make this recipe with only three ingredients—meatballs, bbq (or just ketchup) and grape jelly. You probably have at least two of them in your pantry right now!

Sweet and Smoky: The combination of the sweet grape jelly and smoky barbecue sauce is out of this world! After the meatballs sit simmering in the sauce for a while, they have such a gorgeously glossy appearance—and taste even better than they look!

Appealing Appetizer or Satisfying Snack: You don’t have to wait for a party to make these holiday grape jelly and bbq sauce meatballs. Get a batch going the morning before a busy day and come back home to the most heavenly prepared meal. Or, better yet, bring some in an insulated container and take with you while you run errands. They’re so small and easily transportable.

Great for Leftovers: If you’re lucky enough to have any leftovers, you can freeze them for later or use them to add to vegan meatball subs, chop up and add to a salad, or use in vegan kabobs!

Key Ingredients

To make these glossy vegan grape jelly meatballs, you only need a few ingredients. You can either use whatever you have on hand or go fancy! Choose the very best for each element for an even more celebratory flavor and style!

Key ingredients for vegan BBQ meatballs with labels.

Vegan Meatballs: Already prepared meatless balls work the best in this recipe, but you can read more in the suggestions below. You don’t have to stick to classic vegan meatballs for this recipe, though that is traditional. Feel free to use bean or grain-based version as as well.

BBQ Sauce: If you already have a favorite brand, you’re all set. If not, choose a sauce that is more smoky or vinegar-y so that it balances out the sweetness of the jelly. We also have an out-of-this-world barbecue sauce recipe you won’t want to miss!

Ketchup: A kitchen staple that is both slightly sweet and slightly sour. Any brand will do, even a bunch of packets from your kitchen drawer (if you have enough)!

Grape Jelly: Using grape jelly is what makes the color and texture of the meatballs so amazing. The dark purple color is perfect for creating a lovely deep and appetizing glaze. Equal amounts of both jelly and bbq/ketchup is the key to the incredible flavor.

How To Make BBQ Meatballs

There process to make these delicious vegan grape jelly and bbq meatballs couldn’t be easier!

To start, combine grape jelly, barbecue sauce, and ketchup in a bowl.

Grape jelly and bbq sauce mixed together in a bowl.

Place the meatballs into the slow cooker, then pour the sauce over them, and toss to coat evenly.

Cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours, then switch to the warm setting until it’s time to serve.

Mouthwatering Meatball Suggestions

You may be wondering if it’s best to make your own homemade vegan meatballs or use store-bought for this recipe. Our suggestion is to use store-bought. They’ll keep their shape much better after simmering in the sauce for a few hours. Save your favorite plant-based meatball recipe for pastas and sandwiches, where they’ll be the shining star.

Helpful Vegan Slow Cooker Meatball Tips and Tricks

The crockpot is such a handy and useful machine, especially if you don’t have time to sit around the house all day. Using this efficient slow cooker gives you more time for errands, walks outdoors, and coffee with friends. Even if you often cook crockpot meals, here are a few tips and tricks to assure success:

  • Don’t Lift the Lid – Although it’s really very tempting to lift the lid to see how things are going, that’s the last thing you should do. Foods in the crockpot do not need stirring. If you end up removing the lid for some reason, make sure to add 5 more minutes cooking time.
  • Pressure Cooker vs Slow Cooker – Both the Instant Pot and the crockpot cook foods for you instead of using the stovetop. But, the pressure cooker uses pressure and the slow cooker uses much longer time. With the Instant Pot, you can use the slow cooker option, especially for this recipe. But, read the directions carefully so that you’re choosing the correct settings and time.
  • Opt for Oil – Barbecue sauce and ketchup both like to burn at the bottom of pans, so you may want to rub a little vegan butter or spray oil on the bottom and sides of the crockpot before adding the ingredients. Using the slow cooker reduces this risk (compared to a conventional pan), but if you’ve got an old machine, it may help with clean up.
A hand using a toothpick to pick up one of the vegan bbq sauce meatballs.

What To Serve With Vegan Meatballs

Most people enjoy these meatballs right out of the crockpot because they just can’t wait to try a delicious little bite. Here are a few more civilized, though much less fun, ways of serving this vegan barbecue meatball recipe:

  • Stick It Up!: Use decorative wooden toothpicks to pierce each plant-based bbq meatball and arrange on a pretty plate or platter.
  • Cute Carrying Cups: Fill a mug, mini mason jar, or reusable cup with a few meatballs, extra sauce, and a piece of bread. Pass around for satisfying snacks or late-meal appetizers. Don’t forget the forks!
  • Calling All Carbs: Make a DIY meatball sub bar, complete with several different types of breads, buns, rolls, and pita. Let each person grab the type they like and scoop in their own meatballs. Leave some extra sauce, vegan parmesan, and nutritional yeast nearby.
  • Invest In Vegetables: Sure, you can always bring bread into the equation, but how about fresh veggies like carrot sticks, ribs of celery, romaine hearts, and bell pepper slices? Something crisp and neutral pairs beautifully with the softer texture of the savory meatballs.

Ever had a slice of vegan cheesecake? Chances are that it was made using silken tofu! Silken tofu is the softest type of tofu. It packs the highest water content, making it ideal for blending into dips, desserts and using in other creative silken tofu recipes. You can do so much with this tasty tofu—enjoy a silken tofu smoothie, vegan ranch dressing, or have a warm bowl of silken tofu soup!

A graphic showing sliced silken tofu with the words "Best vegan silken tofu recipes"

What Is Silken Tofu?

There are many types of tofu. Super firm, extra firm, firm, soft, and one of our personal favorites—silken! If you’re wondering: what’s the difference between tofu and silken tofu? Here are the basics.

Silken tofu is the softest type of tofu. In fact it’s so soft it can easily be mashed or blended into a cream. It’s often used for puddings, custards, mouses, pies, smoothies, soups, and more. In Japan it’s often drizzled with a savory sauce and enjoyed plain—and it almost melts in your mouth.

A block of silken tofu on a plate.

Take a look at how tofu is made! Silken tofu is made similar to block tofu. All tofu starts with soybeans, which are blended into soy milk, but silken tofu is coagulated without curdling the milk. It’s also left unpressed, so every cake retains all of its moisture while cooling.

Where Can I Buy Silken Tofu?

Most grocery stores carry shelf-stable silken tofu packaged in aseptic containers, and it’s typically located in a different area of the store than firm tofu. It may be in the Asian foods section of the store or by other baking ingredients.

Even silken tofu comes in different styles—there is soft, firm, extra-film silken tofu. And occasionally you can find silken tofu packaged in water in the refrigerated section with the other tofus. All varieties can be blended into creams and sauces, and act very similarly.

If you’ll be eating the silken tofu plain, opt for the extra firm so it can hold its shape a bit better. Otherwise, any of these will work for nearly any recipe that calls for silken tofu, including all the recipe below!

Have you ever wondered about the different types of tofu out there? We’re thrilled to introduce you to the magic of bean curd and maybe even capture your heart. Our guide not only delves into the various types of tofu but also addresses the question: What is tofu? This vegan staple is a nutritional powerhouse that offers countless ways to prepare and use it.

Tofu is not only delicious in recipes, but also a great addition to a healthy diet. It’s high in protein and calcium, along with a good amount of fiber and essential amino acids. It’s also well-known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory phytochemicals, and iron content.

When it comes to tofu and its diverse types, you might fall into one of two camps: the YUM! I love tofu! crew or the Ew, gross! skeptics. Give us a chance. We’re confident we can sway you toward giving it a try. With endless ways to prepare this versatile plant-based food, there’s bound to be one type of tofu that will beguile you!

What Is Tofu?

Can you believe that these wiggly white squares actually come from a bunch of green soybeans? Tofu is a versatile and plant-based food that’s like a chameleon in the culinary world. Also known as “bean curd,” it frequently appears on Asian restaurant menus.

Bean curd shouldn’t be confused with cheese curds (which are made with dairy) and are completely plant-based. We love tofu and you should too, because it can so easily take on various flavors and offer an array of textures. Use it to make both sweet and savory dishes. That sounds pretty perfect, doesn’t it?

Tofu is made by curdling soybean milk. It comes in different types, such as soft tofu, which is, you guessed it, quite soft and delicate. Other types of tofu include firm, extra firm, and silken.

Soft tofu is a bit like the vegan Jell-O of the tofu family. It’s wobbly and delicate, making it great for blending into smoothies or using in soups.

Firm and extra-firm tofu, on the other hand, are the strong and sturdy members of the tofu gang. They hold their shape well and are perfect for grilling, stir-frying, or even making tofu nuggets.

Silken tofu is super smooth and creamy, almost like a custard. Use it in desserts and creamy sauces for a velvety texture.

Tofu: A Super-Versatile Ingredient!

In this article, we’re going to go on a tofu-tally awesome culinary adventure and learn all about the different types of tofu out there. We’re going to learn how they can be used in dishes, where to find them, and some great recipes you can really sink your teeth into. Let’s go!

In a nutshell, tofu is a soybean-based food that comes in many different types, each with its own unique texture and culinary superpowers. It’s a fantastic ingredient to experiment with in the kitchen and can be a delicious addition to your meals, no matter what type of cuisine you’re cooking!

Types Of Tofu: Most Common Types Explained

You may be asking yourself how many types of tofu are there? We’ll go over the most common types of tofu and the best way to use them. They each have different levels of firmness and are used in a recipe for their particular texture. Choosing the right consistency will make or break your recipe, so it’s best to get familiar with each one.

When choosing tofu, make sure to buy organic when possible so that you can limit your exposure to genetically modified soybeans and the hexane used to produce these GMO beans.

Silken Tofu vs Soft Tofu

Silken tofu and soft tofu are similar in that they both have a smooth and creamy texture, but they are not exactly the same. The main difference between them lies in their firmness and how they are processed. Let’s take a closer look!

Silken Tofu: Silken tofu is the softest and creamiest type of tofu available. It has a very delicate and silky texture, almost like custard. A slightly different production process is used to make silken tofu, allowing it to retain more moisture and achieve a smoother consistency. It finds frequent use in recipes that require a smooth and creamy texture, such as desserts, sauces, smoothies, and soups.

Soft Tofu: Soft tofu is also relatively soft but is slightly firmer than silken tofu. It maintains its shape well when handled and is a common choice in dishes where you aim to preserve some tofu texture, such as stir-fries, hot pots, or tofu scrambles. You can slice or cube it without it breaking apart as easily as silken tofu.

So, while both silken and soft tofu are more delicate compared to other types like firm or extra-firm tofu, they serve slightly different culinary purposes due to their varying textures.

This type of tofu is creamy, silky, and best for blending into creams, fillings, sauces, smoothies, and desserts. This type has the highest water content and may also be referred to as Japanese-style tofu.

Medium-Firm Tofu

Medium-firm tofu has a more solid and dense texture than silken and holds its shape well. Slice, dice, or cube it without the tofu falling apart easily.

This type of tofu is very versatile and can be used in a wide range of savory vegan dishes, including:

Stir-Fries: It works well in stir-fries because it holds its shape (just be gentle when handling it) and can absorb the flavors of sauces and seasonings.

Grilled or Pan-Fried: Marinate, grill, or pan-fry it to create a crispy exterior while maintaining a tender interior.

Soups: Add it to soups and stews for added protein and texture.

Tofu Scrambles: Crumble and season it to make delicious vegan scrambles, similar to scrambled eggs.

Tofu Nuggets: Bread, bake, or fry to make tofu nuggets or cutlets.

You can typically find medium-firm tofu in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores, usually near other plant-based or dairy products.

It’s often packaged in water-filled containers or vacuum-sealed plastic. It may also be available in different sizes, from small blocks to larger packages, depending on your needs.

Firm Tofu

Firm tofu is one of the most popular types of tofu because of its versatility in the kitchen. Its ability to adapt to various cooking methods and flavors makes it a go-to choice for both seasoned cooks and those new to tofu. Don’t be intimidated by this versatile ingredient—it’s a tofu beginner’s best friend!

If you’re new to tofu, firm tofu is an excellent place to start your tofu adventure. Its solid and dense texture is easy to work with, and it won’t crumble on you like some of its softer counterparts. Imagine it as a culinary chameleon, ready to absorb the delicious flavors of marinades, sauces, and seasonings you throw its way.

Firm tofu’s popularity extends to vegan and vegetarian diets, where it shines as a versatile source of plant-based protein. It’s like a blank canvas waiting for your culinary masterpiece. Whether you’re sautéing it in a savory stir-fry, a comforting stew, or crumbling it into a hearty tofu scramble, this tofu type can do it all.

If you’re looking to explore what the world of tofu has to offer, firm tofu is your trusty sidekick. You’ll find it in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store, ready to be transformed into a delicious and nutritious addition to your meals. It’s an ingredient that welcomes newcomers with open arms and endless possibilities in the kitchen.

Extra-Firm Tofu

Extra-firm tofu is tofu’s tough sibling, and it’s different from softer tofu types in a few key ways. It’s super solid and dense, so it won’t break apart when you cook with it. Soft tofu can be delicate, but extra-firm tofu can handle some heat!

In the tofu-making process, extra-firm tofu is made by pressing regular tofu for a more extended period. This removes even more moisture, making it denser and sturdier.

When it comes to using extra-firm tofu, think of it as your protein-packed partner in the kitchen. It’s fantastic for grilling, pan-frying, baking, and air frying because it can get a crispy exterior while staying firm inside. It’s also excellent for slicing or cubing in stir-fries or salads.

Specifically, you can use it in dishes like tofu skewers, bowls, or crispy tofu nuggets. Extra-firm tofu is also perfect for making spicy Szechuan Tofu! It’s like the superhero of tofu types, ready to save the day in your savory creations. So, next time you’re cooking up a tofu storm, grab some extra-firm tofu and let its sturdy nature shine!

Super-Firm Tofu

Super-firm tofu is tofu’s robust relative! It’s firmer than extra-firm tofu, making it a tofu powerhouse. You can find it at well-stocked grocery stores, often in the refrigerated section alongside other tofu varieties.

What sets super-firm tofu apart is its extreme density and minimal moisture content. It’s like tofu with a solid core! (Sometimes it can be referred to as “hard tofu”.) This means it maintains its shape brilliantly during cooking and can even be sliced into thin strips without falling apart.

Super-firm tofu shines in dishes that benefit from a substantial and meaty texture. It’s perfect for grilling, broiling, deep-frying, and even pressing in a waffle iron! Experiment with it in recipes like tofu steaks, kebabs, tofu bacon, or as a hearty meat substitute in sandwiches and wraps. It’s tofu with muscle, ready to elevate your culinary creations!

How To Prep Tofu

Now that you’ve got the type of tofu basics down, let’s dive into how to use tofu like a pro. Here are some additional tips and ideas to make the most of your tofu adventures:

Pressing Tofu

Before using tofu, it’s essential to press it to remove excess moisture. This helps it absorb flavors better and achieve a firmer texture. Use a tofu press (this one is nice and it’s made of bamboo!) or wrap the tofu in paper towels. Place a heavy object on top for at least 30 minutes to expel some of its moisture.

This works best for firmer tofus such as medium-firm, firm, and extra firm. Silken and soft may fall apart when trying to press them. Instead, they can simply be drained and blended or chopped.

Freezing Trick

Want a unique tofu texture? Some people find that freezing their tofu overnight helps with the pressing process. Take your tofu out of its container and drain. Place into a freezer safe container and place in the freezer.

In the morning, take out your tofu and let it defrost for a few hours or until ready to use. When defrosted, hold the tofu in your hands and squeeze out the excess liquid. The theory is that the freezing process creates ice crystals to form that make the tofu firmer, chewier and spongier.

Crispy Tofu

For extra-firm and super-firm tofu, achieve a crispy exterior by coating it in cornstarch or your preferred breading before frying or baking. It’ll be deliciously crunchy on the outside while staying tender inside.

Marinating Magic

Tofu is a flavor sponge, so marinating it is key. For extra flavor, let it soak in your favorite marinade for at least 30 minutes, or even longer for a tastier result. Try different marinades for variety.

How To Use Tofu

Scramble It: Create a tofu scramble by crumbling firm or extra-firm tofu and sautéing it with veggies and your choice of seasonings. It’s a fantastic breakfast or brunch option.

Blend Silken Tofu: Silken tofu is a secret weapon for creamy dishes. Blend it into protein-packed tofu smoothie, add it into soups, or mix to desserts for added creaminess without dairy.

Tofu Desserts: Don’t forget, tofu is a star in desserts! Try making tofu-based chocolate mousse, cheesecake, or pudding for a healthier twist on your favorite sweets.

Tofu Bowls: Create satisfying tofu bowls by combining cooked tofu (shredding it is also a great option!)with grains, veggies, and your favorite sauce or dressing. It’s a nutritious and customizable meal.

Tofu Skewers: Thread tofu cubes onto skewers and grill them with your choice of veggies and marinades for flavorful and protein-packed kebabs.

Key Ingredients

Vegan Hot Dogs: Meatless hot dogs are widely available in most mainstream supermarkets these days. You’ll find a wider selection at natural foods stores, such as Whole Foods or Sprouts, and don’t forget to check the freezer aisle as well as the fresh section, too. You can also try a more highly seasoned meatless sausage if you’d like to change things up.

Hot Dog Buns: White, whole wheat, pretzel, or gluten-free; top-sliced or side-sliced; it’s all fun on a bun! On rare occasion, you might find dairy, eggs, or honey in store-bought options, so always double check labels.

Vegan Chili: Make your own from scratch or crack open a can to get the spice right. While you have a huge number of choices from mild to extra-hot, err on the side of caution when serving a diverse audience. You can always spike yours with sriracha or jalapeño peppers to pump up the volume.

Vegan Cheese: Sharp cheddar-style shreds offer just the right amount of savory, gooey goodness here. We used Violife‘s Just Like Cheddar Shreds because it melts beautifully and tastes great in this dish. But you can use any vegan shredded cheese you can find near you!

What’s The Best Way To Cook Chili Cheese Dogs?

If you’re in a hurry, the microwave can’t be beat. It’s great for anyone cooking with since it’s fast, safe, and works in an instant. Solo diners might enjoy using the air fryer or toaster oven a bit more, since it allows the bun to get lightly toasted instead of slightly chewy.

For a crowd though, it’s easier to assemble all eight dogs in a large casserole dish that you can just slide into the oven at once. In short, there’s no wrong answer; the best way to cook chili cheese dogs is the one that you prefer, so don’t be afraid to experiment!
